Spent Vesak Day exploring Chinatown in Singapore.
Vesak Day
On Monday June 1st it was Vesak Day in Singapore. Vesak Day celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha and is most significant day in the Buddhist calendar. To celebrate Vesak Day I decided to travel south to visit Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown. I was able to explore the numerous shopping and food streets around Chinatown before venturing into the temple to view the status of the Buddha and the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic .
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is a Tang-style Chinese Buddhist temple in the heart of Chinatown and is a common destination for tourists and locals alike. The Temple houses the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic which is a stupa weighing in at 3.5 tonnes and made of 350kg of gold.

Happy Vesak Day (Boun Visakhaboucha in Lao)! I found these really awesome greeting cards. :~D
I love the colours that magically appear through the lens coatings of a vintage Leica Summilux 50MM fully open to f1.4. The dark cerulean blue against this old woman's yellow really struck me as I was passing by in the car...this was a rapid, guessed focus as the rangefinder bright focusing frame didn't have enough light to be effective. I liked how the woman appears like a flag bearer, flying the Vesak festival colours and posed as if she owns the place. The composition is decent, I think, but it was a total lucky shot.
Every year, Sri Lanka has a multi-day national holiday to celebrate Vesak, the festival of enlightenment. Originally a Buddhist construct, it signifies the day of Buddha's birth, death, and attainment of Nirvana. Sort of like Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter rolled into a single day. Local teams create elaborate decorations ranging from multi-level crepe lanterns with elaborate detailing to dioramas of elephants, Buddhist monks, and Buddha himself. This is one of the prettier lanterns I saw while walking the streets of Colombo. I had originally thought to process this shot in black & white, but realized I'd lose the beautiful creamy glow of the internal lighting. I loved the complex textures of the paper mache cutouts against the midnight blue evening light.
