Vesak (also known as Vaiśākha, Vesākha, Saka Dawa/Saga Dawa, Saka Dawa Duchen, Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Day) marks an important Buddhist festival commemorating and celebrating the birthday of Gautama Buddha / Shakyamuni Buddha. In many Buddhist traditions, Vesak marks the day of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death all in one, while in some East Asian Buddhist traditions, only the Buddha's birth is celebrated throughout Vesak, with the observances commemorating Gautama Buddha's enlightenment and death being held on their own dates (on Bodhi Day and Parinirvana Day, respectively).
Vesak is often celebrated on different days depending on one's locality and Buddhist tradition. To honor Vesak, the Buddhist flag is proudly raised in communities and temples; obeisance is paid in the form of meditation, the recitation of sutras and mantras, the singing of hymns, etc.; and offerings are given in the form of flowers, incense, candles or lanterns, and fruits. Followers of Buddhism strive to act with even more compassion during Vesak, and to help and bring joy to others. It is also common to find local temples hosting talks and meditations on the Five Precepts, the Noble Virtues, and relevant sutras (often including the Noble Sutra of Recalling the Three Jewels or the Homage to the Three Jewels), which vary depending on the Buddhist tradition. Many temples and sanghas also host celebratory events, with dancing, music, and traditional foods. It's also believed that karmic results are multiplied significantly (many say as much as 300,000,000 times) on this day, due to the day's sacred nature and the increase of compassionate acts.
