Hi Doc! What are your top five favorite and least favorite things about being a vet? I'm trying to get into vet school rn so I'm curious. Have a great day!

Favorites:

1. Getting to reunite animals that were sick with their owners

2. Never knowing what species is gonna walk in the door

3. Getting to watch your young patients grow up

4. Seeing your sick/critical patients come back when they’re totally healthy

5. Feeling like you’re making a difference for people/pets

Least favorites:

1. “You’re just in it for the money!”

2. Debt load

3. Sick/injured animals that owners refuse to do anything about

4. Trying so hard to save a patient and you just can’t

5. Being called stupid/corrupt because someone who read a blog post thinks they’re more knowledgeable

Hello! I have 2 dogs, a 15 year old yorkie and a 4 year old lab. My yorkie isn't doing so hot and i'm starting to think of end of life plans for him. My lab loves him but he's not a big fan of her. If it comes down to euthanizing my yorkie would it be weird for my lab to be in the room? She's a big ol dum dum so I wonder if he didn't come home one day if she'd always be looking for him. Sorry if this is a weird ask

It would be unusual, but not unheard of, to have a second dog in the room for euthanasia. With Covid going on, you will likely have difficulty finding a clinic that will allow this. Allowing the lab to observe the body of the Yorkie should suffice, although this may be difficult if you plan to have the Yorkie cremated. I’m sorry in advance for your potential upcoming loss.

Where is the line between calling and asking for advice over the phone, and scheduling an appointment? I don't want to take advantage of my vet/their vet tech's time but a phone call is understandably more convenient for me and my pet than heading into the office. I know the answer is quite different in a post-pandemic world, but I still wanted to ask.

If you call and ask a question, and the vet or vet tech tells you that the pet needs to be seen, that is your line.
