Russian Doll 1x05 | Front - Vex Ruffin
2020 FAVORITE ALBUMS
Thundercat - It Is What It Is (Brainfeeder)
It is what it is: a less fucked-up AND groovier Thundercat.
SAULT - Untitled (Black is) (Forever Living Originals)
It’s Untitled but it’s also titled Black is.
I am not black but I’m chanting along with I’m Black.
Cleo Sol - Rose in the Dark (Forever Living Originals)
I want this in body oil format too.
Vex Ruffin - LiteAce Frequency (Stones Throw Records)
Might as well be the funky equivalent of Dirty Beaches.
Yves Tumor – Heaven To A Tortured Mind (Warp Records)
I can’t help adoring a more accessible Yves Tumor.
Jessie Ware – What's Your Pleasure? (PMR)
If only this question was asked more often on this planet
8/31/20.
Vex Ruffin is complicated in every way possible. He grew up in Northridge, CA, then moved to the Philippines and now resides in Chino, CA. I first heard “I’m Still At It” and probably would have left it at that, but then “All I Have” was next. I had to make sure I was listening to the same album. The two songs are that different (be sure to listen to “All I Have”).
Vex Ruffin is as diverse as his upbringing. Whether sounding like Michael Jackson, Beck, or (I’m sure he’s never heard of) Monroe Mustang. You get the picture. This is music that mimics life.
This is released by Stones Throw Records (Los Angeles). This label’s sounds are all over the place, but we did post about Mild High Club in September 2016.
