When Diplomacy Fails... // United States Navy
A US Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet with VFA-86 (Strike Fighter Squadron 86), the "Sidewinders", dives into the famous "Star Wars Canyon" at Death Valley National Park. The canyon's real name is Rainbow Canyon and aviation geeks from all over the world gather at Father Crowley Point that overlooks the canyon for one hell of an air show as combat pilots conduct low level training along a route the US military calls the "Jedi Transition". A low level training route runs through Rainbow Canyon and connects the military training airspace over the Panamint Valley with the airspace over the Owens Valley to the west. Note the AIM-9X on the wingtip rail and the clipped fin AIM-120C (the fins are clipped compared to the earlier AIM-120A/B variants to allow internal carriage on aircraft like the Raptor) on the body station. A few weeks ago was my first visit to Star Wars Canyon.
