the way the meta horror fan character in scream: resurrection puts everyone into a clearly defined role from classic slasher movies & says that the “rules” of horror say that black & gay people don’t survive horror movies & you’re not allowed to do anything that could be considered “immoral” - but she’s actually the killer, so she’s the one who’s been enforcing these “rules” the whole time & there are 3 black survivors & the girl who she said couldn’t be the final girl whos been telling her not to put her in a box like that steps up to the plate & kicks her ass.

i think there’s something there about how writers feel like they can get away with excessive violence towards characters of color, lgbt characters, & women by blaming the conventions of the genre when it’s 100% in their power not to do that. like sure you can say you’re being “meta” or “genre savvy” but you just end up with another movie where the token black character dies first & the only survivors are white, or where the token gay character dies tragically & the main straight couple get a happy ending through the ~ power of love ~ or whatever, or the deaths of women are unnecessarily sexualized or brutal (yes i am talking about the rest of the scream franchise & it chapter 2 & just a lot of modern horror that should be past this kind of shit). & a lot of people try to excuse it because “it’s a horror movie what do you expect” as if we shouldn’t be as critical of horror as any other genre

& i think one of the themes in the scream movies is killer as writer/director - the killers are concerned with creating their own narrative - & this feels like an extension of that where it’s clear that these regressive tropes only exist because the writer chooses to write them, not because they’re realistic or inherent to any genre

anyway this season was really slept on just because it was a reboot & fans of the first 2 seasons were mad that their white faves weren’t getting another mediocre season when their story was already bled dry - & i think that’s really a missed opportunity because that was a show that fell into this trap & disproportionately killed off its characters of color (bonus points if they’re an underdeveloped love interest killed off for man pain)

Unpopular Opinion: Scream season 3 is way better than the first two seasons.  Y’all are just hesitant and hypercritical because it’s not the same cast.
