Thoughts on the Crystal reed and admin thing?
2. The admins excuse that her boyfriend mentioned in an interview with an Australian newspaper and that Australian newspaper has a high fact checking/ethics standard is bullshit. And I helped explain that to them (I was messaging @khadijha SO MUCH STUFF TO SEND TO THEM). And yet they (the admins of the rp) kept coming back, "well they had to fact check and ask Crystal". Okay? So they asked Crystal (maybe)?? And she said yes?? Still doesn't mean she's Native. "Fact-checking" and "ethics" and stuff in journalism is also very different when talking of an interview vs a hard-hitting story.
ACTUALLY ETHICS AND FACT-CHECKING IN INTERVIEWS AND SUCH IS QUOTING PEOPLE DIRECTLY. Not misquoting them. I mean hell, I'm not going to quote something from this because it's disgusting but they quoted stuff from an Islamophobic member of Parliament directly in this article. Same newspaper and everything. Because that's ethics and fact-checking when it comes to quotes, and they were operating off of quotes.
*If* her boyfriend had said, "Oh yeah she's half [insert specific tribe here]" maybe they would've fact-checked with the tribe too. But they definitely didn't for just "half Native American". It's impossible for that newspaper to approach over 560 tribes to all ask, they didn't do that.
And that's a big *if*, I mean the New York Times (which is generally considered reputable also has high ethics, integrity, and fact-checking standards, read here and here) published an article around the time that Wind River was released that was, ironically, titled "What’s So Hard About Casting Indian Actors in Indian Roles?" and mentioned Kelsey Chow/Asbille being, specifically, Eastern Band of Cherokee (article is here on their site, also a link if you hit your free article limit and need a work-around). Yet we know that's not true and the Eastern Band of Cherokee came out after this article with a press release saying that she’s not a member of their tribe, nor have any of her family members or ancestors been a member of their tribe. Yet, the New York Times still hasn’t fixed it, because they met their fact-checking standards there, which is quoting the celebrity.
So yeah. That's my opinion. Crystal isn't a Native, and people are really embarrassing themselves defending that she is.
By the way, before the admins try me, I work in government affairs and relations, I am in a Master's program to further my work in government affairs and relations, I go to school at one of the largest and most well-known research universities in the United States and often have to use news sources for papers in classes, and I have taken several Communications courses. I know what I'm talking about.
I guess TL;DR is I agree fully with @khadijha and @ladysgodiva (us Natives got to stick together).
