3/11/13 for Leaves in the Void!
3. What was your favourite line of narration?
Either It took Grantaire a while to stop crying. or Irritatingly, nothing knocked him out like the prospect of having to deal with intense feelings, but it wasn’t exactly a reliable strategy for combating insomnia.
11. What do you like best about this fic?
Enjolras’ letter. I actually handwrote it (on yellow lined paper just like he did) to get a better idea of how much would fit on each page, and how many pages there would be.
13. What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
Extremely specifically, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, from the 2015 Broadway recording of An American in Paris. I almost put in a bit about it being one of Grantaire’s favourite songs because it sort of encapsulated his attitude to his crush on Enjolras - there’s no hope at all, but it’s nice having him in his life anyway, and the way Enjolras makes him feel is something that can’t be tarnished, and doesn’t need to be acted on. In the end I decided that a) it was unnecessary, and b) the fic is set so far in the future that An American in Paris has probably faded completely from culture. I recommend listening on Spotify rather than YouTube, because the song goes straight into the Epilogue and doesn’t get prematurely cut off.
