One of my favorite things about the Rick Riordan’s mythology books are how frequently and loudly the characters complain about just how hard their lives are. All of the kids in these stories start off having issues, and having their lives turned upside down by their magical destinies is not a good thing for them, and having them be openly honest about their feelings and thoughts about the messed up stuff they have to deal with makes the experience of reading Riordan’s work so, so much more relatable and cathartic.

There are so many themes in these books that I could talk about for an eternity, but my favorite thing is that all the kids have Problems. When I was introduced to the first PJO book as a kid, I think I was kind of turned off from it because of just how close to home the story would hit sometimes, but something always drew me back to the series. As an adult, when I finally took the time to really sit down and read Riordan’s books I fell in love and straight up DEVOURED everything he’d made for his mythology related works. They made me feel understood, in a lot of ways, and now I can say that Riordan is one of my favorite authors of all time.
