Wanted to try my hand at food illustration by doing a fantasy food dish based off of The Devil City and its 77 Vicious Princes tabletop game that snowballed into an illustration AND accompanying snippet of writing to fill the empty canvas space. Had a lot of fun colouring and shading with this one, and trying to arrange it similar to the rule book’s design!

The Devil City & Its 77 Vicious Princes, Version 36

It's been a few months since I've given you an update on the game but I want to reassure you that I am still hard at work on The Devil City & Its 77 Vicious Princes. With this update I am (I very much hope) finished with the core rule set of DC77VP. I think the game is in a really strong place, having playtested it with a number of groups. If you were waiting for the rules to stop changing before you tried bringing this game to the table, wait no longer. I am shifting my focus now to supplemental content, specifically my dungeon23 project which will, I hope, add a lot of new content to the game. I'll detail that in a followup post soon.

PART I

Some updates to the Turn Actions section in order to clarify scene inventory.

Knavery has been changed again. I know, I know. But I wanted to bring back the core idea of "trait=you add dice". I think it's in a really good place now.

Violence has been tweaked to introduce the concept of NPC HD. (this ties into the dungeon23 project)

Language added to the Playbook section detailing an optional playbookless mode

Two new Playbooks: Outlander and Sailor!

PART II

Examples of play have been updated to reflect the Knavery update.

FAQ has been updated with advice on adapting DC77VP to other settings, and running one-shots.

Hi everyone!!! I have a little announcement for those of you who have been showing interest in The Devil City & Its 77 Vicious Princes, or alternatively those who are kind of into the idea, but want to stick to rolling d20s and delving dungeons (perfectly understandable) I've officially released my first paid thing, THE ORC-MAGICIANS OF ZARKANY!

This is two things: a full class for Old School Essentials, a dope retroclone by Necrotic Gnome, and an expansion on the rules of magic for Vicious Princes. It's fully illustrated by me (and I'm hoping to update it with more art as I go!). For two bucks, you can have both. And if that's too much green for your blood, there's a good amount of community copies available over on my itch.

When I'm not playing Vicious Princes, I always reach first and foremost for OSE. I really love the lethal problem-solving nature of retroclone games--it's one of the big inspirations behind how I made DC77VP.

The catch is that I can't just NOT run in Zarkany. I've spent the last like 2 years making this setting. So for my own sake I wanted to figure out how to port the magic system over. I think I've done a pretty good job. But of course I'm new to publishing material for that system, so if you're used to it I'm sure you'll see design issues that I'm totally clueless about. Please give me your thoughts. Did I mention I have a discord?

Of particular interest for my Vicious Princes fans, though, is the version for that game. One thing I've noted as I've been running it with my group is that a lot of my brainspace when it comes to rulings is taken up by the arbitration of magic. I give some advice in the rulebook on this, but I wanted to provide a little more for the groups that really want it. There's seventy spells in here for you to advance your sinister agenda with and blow yourself up attempting--and each trait now has a crownspell, a powerful ultimate technique that carries with it a most demanding price.
