They were so much better about it before. Idk. This season has felt very odd to me. Kind of like there’s been a shift in the overall vibe/direction of the show. Every episode has been really intense and dramatic and the family hasn’t been bonding as much as they used to. Hopefully 4B will be better cause I’m not feeling this over-the-top, scattered drama.

It feels like the plots are driving the characters and not the other way around. I’m not a fan either tbh.

getting scenes between them in 3A when Jesus was off at boarding school. I do think he feels very protective of her, though. As for Mariana and Gabe, I'm surprised we haven't seen more of them this season. I feel like the writers are having a hard time juggling all their current storylines which is why everything feels so scattered right now. Hope that changes soon.

That’s true, Jesus did show some interest in Ana before he went off to school. I feel like the show did a much better job of integrating various characters in the beginning--just like in a real family everyone had particular people that they were closest to but for the most part everyone was involved in everyone else’s lives (except Jesus and Callie which has always stood out to me bc they basically never talked). But you’re definitely right about everything feeling scattered now; it seems like the writers want to do all the things with all the characters and as a result everyone’s off in their own stories and we rarely get to see them intersect.

So I'm on mobile right now because I'm on vacation, but I watched tonight's episode and can I just say that I am SO GLAD you were right about Gabe?? I was so worried they were going to pull something out of nowhere, but they didn't, and I am so grateful. Also, did Gabe say Ana was the one who called him about Jesus?

I’m really pretty pleased about that whole storyline (and not just because I was right lol). It makes sense for his character, it involves serious issues (both depression itself and the stigma that men face when talking about their feelings) but not in a forced look-how-edgy-we-are kind of way, and it grew organically from his previous plotline. This is exactly the kind of writing I want to see.

I caught that Ana mention, too! I wish she had come to the hospital--after all, Mike did--but maybe she would have felt like she was overstepping. I wish we could see more of Jesus interacting with Ana/Mariana interacting with Gabe because I feel like the only time either twin shows any interest in their different-gender birth parent is when they’re acting on behalf of their sibling (i.e. Jesus getting Ana into the shelter because Mariana wanted to help her/Mariana yelling at Gabe for getting Jesus hurt).

Shit, you’re right. I honestly forgot Stef had cancer last season. Did we ever find out if she finally had the surgery for the breast implants? You make a good point about the title, though, I hadn’t even considered that. I really hope you’re right about Gabe being depressed because anything else would feel so forced and unnecessary. This season is so heavy.

I don’t even remember where we left off with Stef’s cancer storyline. I think she decided to get the implants but I don’t remember if we actually saw her go through with it or are just supposed to assume she did at some point. This show crams so many Big Issues into such a short period of time that it ends up having no impact. I hope they don’t try to do something big and dramatic with Gabe next.

I honestly have no idea. For some reason my first thought was that he found out he had some sort of serious illness and was trying to keep it a secret, but that seems so out of the blue. I like your theory a lot better. It makes sense, and it’s nowhere near as contrived. Some people seem to think he’s using, but I doubt the writers will go there. We’ve already had so many drug storylines.

I wouldn’t put a serious illness past the writers either tbh. Stef’s cancer storyline came out of nowhere (and disappeared just as quickly?) but that didn’t stop them.

Depression was my first thought based on the title, “Highs and Lows”, since the high part is obviously Jude’s storyline. There’s a lot of other things the “lows” could be referring to but idk, that just jumped out at me.

so in one of the sneak peeks for next episode, jesus calls gabe to ask why he hasn't shown up to work on the garage the past couple of days, and gabe says he 'hasn't been feeling well' but that he'll show up to the house the next day. except the episode description says jesus gets injured trying to cover for gabe when he doesn't show up at the house, so clearly that doesn't happen. idk if it was because jesus' call woke him up or something, but gabe sounded off on the phone. theories?

I wonder if he’s depressed, especially after he had that breakdown with Jesus. In theory everything’s going right for him right now but like... he’s spent his entire adult life branded as a sex offender and now that he’s off the list he could be having this “where-do-I-go-from-here” moment. He’s always been able to blame being on the registry for things that go wrong in his life, and now everything’s on him and that could be a lot of pressure. He could be drinking or using but I almost feel like that would be too obvious?

idk I haven’t paid much attention to Gabe when he’s not in scenes with Ana, so I could be completely off. What do you think?

I hadn’t thought of it as “sisterly” (until the “Mariana’s dead to me” which I hadn’t seen when I started writing this) but now that you mention it I’m having so many feels. bc like... clearly Ana isn’t Mariana’s parent anymore but she’s certainly something to her. I am 100% here for Ana as the wise big sister figure who gives Mari advice and listens to things she isn’t comfortable sharing with her moms yet and steers her away from the poor decisions that Ana herself made at Mariana’s age (not that Mariana needs nearly as much steering as Ana did, but you know what I mean).

Ugh the more I think about it the more I love this dynamic.
