Neoclassical Silver

Neoclassical silver borrows and interprets designs from ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Neoclassical design was very popular in America from 1850-1900. Some of the common motifs illustrated above are the Greek key or meander pattern, Roman Centurions, and stylized acanthus leaves. Corinthian columns were also a favorite form for candlesticks. The epergne was made by Curran and Co, New York and features both a Greek key pattern and stylized Acanthus leaves. The covered serving dish by Middletown Plate Co. is encircled by  a frieze of Roman Centurions and stylized Acanthus leaves. The antique clock, retailed by Gump’s, is crowned with a bronze sculpture of a Roman Centurion.
