275. Alyosha - “Sweet people” Ukraine 2010
It was bound to happen at some point, but here we have a song I absolutely have no opinion about lol. There IS a market for “Hot Solo Blonde Women Screaming Into Windmachines” but it’s a trope I absolutely don’t care for lol.
Besides this, “Sweet people” is really weird? Wasn’t she also like... the third choice for Ukraine in that year? I can’t seem to make sense of “Sweet People”. I can’t place what it is. Is it a charity ballad? A power ballad? A guitar ballad? A rock song? Whatever it is, it ain’t interesting, so.

274. Eliot - “Wake up” Belgium 2019
*sigh* It was only a matter of time before RTBF would score an NQ, but it’s still sad never the less. 😭
Having said that, Eliot’s NQ was well-deserved, firstly the live wasn’t very good (Eliot’s voice was REALLY thin on the night) but foremost because RTBF totally misread Wake Up as a song. You see, when the most notable point of criticism about your song is the key change, you don’t just pretend like it’s not there. You turn what is commonly perceived as your greatest shortcoming into your greatest strength!! (a good example of this would be KEiiNO, who turned their weak link, Fred, into the centerpiece that won them the televote). By not addressing the key change and instead burying it under several insipid staging ideas, Belgium have allowed their song to become one of the least impactful of the night when it really shouldn’t have been.😭 However, I don’t... dislike "Wake up” or anything. It’s mediocre, but I mostly feel bad for Eliot for having to put up with bad staging AND worse styling. 273. Thea Garrett - “My dream” Malta 2010
So remember the old urban myth of Eurofans introducing their American friends to Eurovision by comparing ESC to American Idol? That’s always the first thing I think about when I’m reminded of Thea Garrett. 😂 And to be honest “being precisely like an American Idol Coronation Ballad” is one of two notable things about “My dream”, the other being hunky Oswald Cobblepot who makes a cameo appearance near the end. It’s perfectly average otherwise, though!

272. Filipa Sousa - “Vida minha” Portugal 2012
A textbook example of Fado Schlager, perhaps a bit too textbook? Like Alyosha, I struggle with finding things to say, lol. Filipa Sousa conducted herself well, and then she NQ’d. It’s not a very gripping story. We’ve seen better of her kind.

Lol remember when O. Torvald won vidbir while dressed as SUICIDE BOMBERS? 😂😂 After which they of course had to change their staging and resorted to a giant olmec head, which was much less impactful. Whatever, we’ve seen better of their kind also.
