The clock echoed throughout the house. Tick... tick... tick...

A mechanical sound she was growing used to hearing among the consistency of her daily life at home. Wake up in a cold sweat. Tend to the kits. Kudros is at the workshop already. Chores. Clean up. Start dinner. Get dinner ready. Eighteenth bell, Kudros is home. Eat dinner. Clean kits up. Get them ready for bed. Put them in bed. Ask Kudros about work. “No breakthroughs yet”. Shower. Sleep.

Tick... tick... tick...

Repeat.

Occasionally, Meih would come by to babysit, or take the twins out somewhere for the day, and V would take the opportunity to get groceries. It was surprising this routine didn’t turn a once so spontaneous and impulsive Miqo’te into a stir-crazy mess. Day in and day out since the accident rescuing Kudros from the Castrum he was posted at, she’d spent nearly every day indoors at home.

There was some rhyme and reason, however. The comfort of her home, the restrictive schedule she’d set her fiance to since his return, the routine was familiar and it was easier to deal with than the anxiety of irregularity in her daily life. An assassin turned broken housewife wasn’t where she imagined herself at this age. A young girl growing up defiantly rebelling against strict routine, tradition and norms, now a woman beaten into submission.

Meih had the kits out in Gridania for a few nights. They enjoyed spending time out there, though V wished she could take them out to Thanalan to experience where she’d grown up. Chasing lagoon toads in the village where she grew up, using the palm leaves from the trees to ride down the sand dunes. There was a lot she could get away with while her mother wasn’t watching her in her youth. It was a sour feeling to her, nevertheless, though she wished it wasn’t.

The sun was nestling into the horizon from the view in their little cottage in Shirogane. The smell of clean laundry wafted toward her nose and the warmth of the summer sun dried linens heated her cold hands comfortably. In this moment, anxiety was an afterthought. Kudros was working away a few blocks away, the house was peaceful, and chores could be done in peace.

Knock, knock, knock.

Or so she had thought. Her heart slammed against the breastbone in her chest roughly, her palms instantly becoming clammy out of fear. She wasn’t too sure when this habit started, but she had an idea. The Castrum incident was one that she carried poorly with her. Since then, she didn’t know who would show up at the door looking to take Kudros away, or threaten her family. She could feel the past catching up with them, and she was directly unable to help it, and was vastly unprepared.

She placed her sheet down in the basket as she slowly approached the door. She felt as though she could barely grip the doorknob without her hands slipping. With a twist of her wrist, she pulled the door toward her just gently enough to see who was outside.

For once, her anxiety was stopped in it’s tracks. Her heart previously battering to free itself from it’s bony prison, felt as though it dropped down into the pit of her stomach. This wasn’t anxiety. This was dread.
