Sarah, the murderous hurricane she is, sometimes needs a port to dock. At the end of the day, why would a woman sleep with a gun under her pillow if she had no hopeful heart in her chest to protect? To her utter disappointment, every time she went out into the open ocean to try and find a harbor for her heart to stay and rest, at least for a little while, everything she found was... a few rusty bolts, useless in their core—but Sarah would never lack creativity when finding them a hole to stick into.

But the difficult task wasn’t to find them a place to be useful; the puzzle was to stay in the mask, to put on a face, and keep it on. Doesn’t matter what happened, she was not allowed to let her emotions slip through the cracks. It did not matter how substantial the cracks were, no one was asking her if the mask was even holding together. Her task was to survive another day—at what cost? Wasn’t even a question.

The only moments of downs that life allowed her were nights in bars, sitting silently, drinking away the rest of the money her family left her by their downfall. A red-haired girl sitting at a table, wishing the music—outstandingly dynamic and hopeful—played louder, so her thoughts, she was so sick of, would shut up.

“Hey, foxy!” — a voice drowning in all the rom Sarah poured down her throat, sounded energetic, yet painfully trustable.

“My name is Vi, but you can call me Darling…” — blue-eyed, reaching for Sarah’s hand, which she still held as if she had a gun, to kiss it — “…do you like the music, foxy?”

The shit they were playing in this bar was night-to-night the same, so Sarah wasn’t really paying attention at this point. Regardless, before she was even able to process the question or come up with an answer, the cheeky girl spun her around in the dance.

Sarah wasn’t remembering a lot past this point—only her, the Darling, and lots of talks. Fortune does not remember what they were about, but explicitly remembers telling Vi about her parents, her not really having a home to come back to, the life she was living, the lengths she was subjecting herself to in order to survive. She didn’t manage to remember how Vi offered her an overnight stay at Vi’s place, sleeping peacefully. Fortune finally wasn’t fighting.

One night in her life that does not require survival. The best gift she could dream about.
