This unique war film is set in Lapland during late 1944. The Finns collaborated with the Nazis in the war against Russia. Veikko (Haapasalo) is a Finnish soldier who is accused of being a pacifist, so the Germans dress him in a German uniform and shackle him to a rock, leaving him some food and water and a sniper rifle. Any Russians who encounter Veikko will surely try to kill him, so the Germans are effectively consigning him to the fate of being a sort of forced Kamikaze sniper. Meanwhile Ivan (Bychkov), a Red Army captain who has been accused of anti-Soviet correspondence, is being transported to his court marshall when the vehicle is bombed from the air, killing all but Ivan. The injured Ivan is found by a Sami widow named Anni who drags him back to her coastal farm and tends to his injuries. Meanwhile Veikko manages to break his chain free from the rock to which it was bolted. Veikko then comes across Anni's farm and ends up seeking shelter with her.

None of the three main characters speak a common language, so there is a lot of miscommunication. Living with the simple Lap peasant, the enemy soldiers have experiences that emphasize the arbitrariness of who constitutes the enemy in war situations.
