forever glad to have pulled vil’s birthday jacket card, because it means that frequently, the first thing I hear when I open twst is vil saying cater’s name.

(I love when characters say each others’ names)

(this dialogue also means so much to me btw. it is a standard fixture in all my vilkei headcanons, because to me, it marks the moment when cater’s gift to vil became more personal and less focused on what was expensive and/or trendy. cater got vil a gift that was uniquely meaningful to him, knowing that vil considers the shaftlands home. and it stuck with vil enough for him to have it as a line of dialogue. look at him bringing up cater of his own volition, with a smile on his face!)

thought i had a while ago upon watching the movie for the first time: vilcay jennifers body au

I've always really enjoyed the angst and the bittersweetness of characters knowing a break-up is inevitable. When they know that they're having their last day together, and they know their time is limited, but they try to enjoy the time anyway. there's something so tragic about that specific form of yearning. Maybe they have to be separated, or maybe they're just too different in one specific, deal-breaking way. But there's still so much love between them, and it's heartbreaking to know that it'll all be over. They're right in front of you, you can love them and touch them and be there with them, but there's a deadline to it.

I've had this montage in my head for a while of Vilkei spending one last day/night together before graduation, before they inevitably break up. in this, neither of them think they can make it last past graduation. cater has never maintained meaningful relationships with someone after moving away, and vil thinks he will be far too busy making a name for himself as an adult rather than a child actor. their fourth year internships were hard enough on them, though they really did try. despite their best efforts, a distance just grew between them, and though they love each other still, it's just not the same.

so they spend their last day/night together, and it's soft and sad and beautiful and tragic. they go out and have lunch/dinner, and they come back and watch a movie, and they cuddle, and they dance to music only they can hear, and they talk and laugh and kiss. and when they wake up in each other's arms, they wonder whether they really have to split at all. maybe they can just see how long they last, maybe they can make long distance work, maybe this doesn't have to be an end. but then they remember how hard the past year was, and they just can't bear to let the relationship wither away until not even a friendship is left. they both mean too much to each other for that.

I imagine they reconnect after a few years, though. I always hc them reconnecting on a film set; a film that vil is acting in and cater is working on the soundtrack for. he says he would be interested in working in magazines or films, after all. so, either that or cater takes up a job working as an interviewer for a magazine, and ends up interviewing vil (he was chosen to interview vil because they went to school together, and he'd have unique insights. I also like this because it parallels the conversation they have when talking about their internships, where cater says that vil sounded like he was giving an interview for an entertainment magazine). and of course that old spark is there; of course they're just it for each other. and maybe now that they're older and more established, it won't have to end this time.

The comforter was unreasonably soft against his skin—that was the first thing Cater noticed when he awoke. The second thing was birdsong, the dawn chorus a charming complement to the rising sun. The third, and perhaps most important, was the warmth of the boy beside him, pressed against his side with an arm slung over his waist. Sevens, Vil was beautiful in his sleep. He was always gorgeous, obviously, but especially so when his face was clear of worry and he looked completely at peace. Cater pressed a soft kiss to the crook of Vil's neck, pausing to check for movement before kissing him once more.
