Horseshoe crabs are the oldest living species of animals on Earth! And by that I mean their species has been around for hundreds of millions of years, and is the only extant animal from the family Limulidae (with four different species globally), one of the older clades of organism in the fossil record. They’re older even than alligators and their relatives, if that provides a good barometric for how Absolutely Ancient these critters are.

Horseshoe crabs are actually not true crabs, either! They’re closer relatives to spiders and scorpions, belonging to Arthropoda subphylum Chelicerata and sister phylum to Arachnida. However, horseshoes are completely harmless and docile creatures by nature- perfectly pettable, with no fangs or stinger to speak of. Though, they do have a mean grip with their sets of claws on the underside, so pick them up at the risk of getting pinched. We affectionately call them Roombas of the sea because that’s what they do! They scoot along the bottom, digging up detritis and scavenging for tasty bits on the benthic level, and they keep our holding pools crazy clean. Females are larger than males by almost twice the weight, which is good because mating season means the males become like a backpack welded to their opisthosoma (their abdomen region) and Will Not Let Go. Can confirm, I’ve had to break up the male crabs from grabbing each other because they’re ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED their housemates are in the mood to get frisky, and it’s nearly impossible. Even if you succeed, they’ll inevitably cling on again once left alone.

Sadly, Sea Roombas aren’t without their own share of problems :( They’re harvested regularly for the high copper content in their blood, which has been experimented with as a potential ingredient in antibacterial medicine. The stress of handling, transport, and bleeding these animals decreases their breeding success, and that’s if they’re even released back into the wild. Most pharmaceutical partnerships responsible for crab bleeding are suspected of selling the crabs as fish bait instead, which is the other high demand for the crabs. As a result, animals that prey on the crabs or their hundreds of thousands of eggs annually are also suffering a decline.

To end on a higher note, they are very intelligent! While their vision (light, motion, UV, and limited color) isn’t particularly great in any one category, they are capable of recognizing patterns! I had one of our females approach my boot while I was feeding, and she kept trying to climb onto my steeltoe. I noticed she was covered in gravel and sand (not sure how she managed that, sand and debris tend to slide right off when they emerge from digging), so I dusted it off, during which she sat patiently, and once I was done she immediately turned and trundled along her way. They also definitely play. They’re frequent customers of the inflow vent, where they’ll throw themselves into the current, flip over, right themselves, then come back to do it again. They will do this repeatedly, without incentive.
