Kagura had not intended to be anywhere near Olympus. The mountain and everything upon it represented precisely the sort of thing she disliked, such as hierarchies, rules, immortal politics, and gods who believed themselves entitled to obedience. She had merely been passing through the upper winds, following the currents that danced between realms, and the skies above Olympus were rich with prayer and power, making them difficult to resist. That was how she found herself suddenly caught by a familiar voice. “Leaving already?” Before she could turn, a hand closed around her wrist and the world spun. Wind shrieked around her ears, then her feet touched solid marble.
Kagura stared at the golden pillars stretched toward a painted sky. Music drifted through the air. Nectar flowed from fountains. Immortals laughed and conversed beneath floating lanterns made from captured stars. Her eyes narrowed as Hermes stood beside her, looking entirely too pleased with himself. “I was passing by,” she said flatly. “Now you’re attending.” The messenger god grinned before disappearing into the crowd with the same irritating ease he had used to drag her here. The minor deity exhaled slowly as the silks of her crimson robes shifted in the breeze gathering unconsciously around her. Several Olympians glanced her way. She recognized the looks immediately, as she was a minor foreign goddess born from rebellion and was not exactly welcome company among rulers. She hadn’t wanted to be here anyway and had already considered the quickest route back to the sky when she felt it.
The ravenette’s gaze drifted across the hall and landed on him. The god sat apart from the festivities as though the celebration flowed around him rather than including him. It was Hades, king of the Underworld. For the first time since arriving, Kagura stopped looking for the nearest exit. A ribbon of wind curled around her wrist, and her fingers tightened around her fan. Before she could stop herself, she found her feet carrying her forward through the crowd.
