The thing I hate most about poor tank conditions (LOOKING AT YOU, TIKTOK) is when people think they're SO smart and say "It's just a fish"

So you're going to tell me that you spent money on a living, breathing, thinking thing just to let it die due to your negligence? You're going to blatantly state that you don't care about animals if they're not fuzzy, expressive, 'cute', and cuddleable? You're going to say "yes, I refuse to improve my pets living space simply because it is a cheap animal that I cannot read." It's fine to not like fish. I understand they're not for everyone. But to take an animal and slowly torture it by making it swim in it's own filthy unfiltered shit water is awful. You wouldn't keep a cat in a cat carrier for its whole life would you? If I did the equivalent to a dog, and posted my dogs "cute tiny crate! So minimalist and trendy!" that they could barely turn around in, I would have the authorities called on me. "No I don't feed my dog, they filter dust from the air and eat their own poop, so I don't even need to clean it! I know more about dogs than you :)))) see, he's obviously just fine!" They're a pet, not decor. A sad little betta with fin rot in a half gallon vase with no heater, no filter, and dirty untreated tap water with bamboo shoved in the top is not attractive. You know what would really be eye catching? A clean tank with healthy fish to watch. Gross tanks aren't cool and they make you look like a fucking dweeb. If you really want a fish in that small of a vase, just get a fake one PLEASE. Fish need so much more care than just 'water in a container'. And no, I don't want to hear about your fish who lived for years in a horrid little tank, they were most definitely suffering.

Long story short, just do your fish research, and if you're not willing or able to provide the proper home, don't fucking get the fish. Getting a goldfish? I hope you have a 40+ gallon tank or a pond, or they'll become deformed from a small tank. You want a betta? 5 gallons MINIMUM, with hiding spots and no sharp decor. Mollies or guppies? They're gonna screw like rabbits, you'd better have somewhere to put those babies. And just about every fish needs a filter, plenty need heaters, and you'll need a proper light. Just like dogs, cats, bunnies, and birds, fish are a commitment. PLEASE... be nice to them.
