"The Squash Bed: A Tragedy"
Alright, this is my final 'fuck you, vineborers' post for the season because I only have two surviving zucc plants and I've already mentally come to terms with their demise. So... fuck you, vineborers.
I'm still overall pleased, though, because I had a game plan this year and it worked pretty much how I had hoped it would. 1. Plant a shit ton of zucchini/squash so that I can at least eat on it for a few weeks before they succumb to pests. 2. Pull entire plants as I see damage b/c ain't nobody got time for that. And it worked! I got a really great harvest and did a good job of staying ontop of squash bugs while I was at it (no really, I was overran last year).
The downfall was that when I say I planted a shit ton of squash, I mean a shit ton of squash. You can see from the second picture where, despite my best efforts, rust and powdery mildew had taken over and made the bed pretty sickly b/c I have no concept of spacing. Next year I'll start earlier, space them a little better, and be more consistent with regular BT and Neem Oil doses.
Thankful for the last beautiful harvest I got from the squash bed before I had to pull the plug. I think I'll turn it into zucchini bread for me and the cute little worm currently sapping all of MY nutrients. 🤔
