Does anyone know how to get rid of /repel squash bugs? Found a few squash bugs on my pumpkin plants tonight and some had already laid eggs. Got rid of the eggs and killed one but there are still at least two bugs I wasn’t able to get
Found these fuckers on my pumpkins… i read that you can use water with dish soap to get rid of squash bugs but does anyone else know how to deal with them?
"The Squash Bed: A Tragedy"
Alright, this is my final 'fuck you, vineborers' post for the season because I only have two surviving zucc plants and I've already mentally come to terms with their demise. So... fuck you, vineborers.
I'm still overall pleased, though, because I had a game plan this year and it worked pretty much how I had hoped it would. 1. Plant a shit ton of zucchini/squash so that I can at least eat on it for a few weeks before they succumb to pests. 2. Pull entire plants as I see damage b/c ain't nobody got time for that. And it worked! I got a really great harvest and did a good job of staying ontop of squash bugs while I was at it (no really, I was overran last year).
The downfall was that when I say I planted a shit ton of squash, I mean a shit ton of squash. You can see from the second picture where, despite my best efforts, rust and powdery mildew had taken over and made the bed pretty sickly b/c I have no concept of spacing. Next year I'll start earlier, space them a little better, and be more consistent with regular BT and Neem Oil doses.
Thankful for the last beautiful harvest I got from the squash bed before I had to pull the plug. I think I'll turn it into zucchini bread for me and the cute little worm currently sapping all of MY nutrients. 🤔
today’s fun fact about permaculture and companion planting is: it doesn’t matter what pest bug problem you’re having, the solution is carrots and cilantro. attract parasitic & predatory wasps. problem solved
Squash bugs shall rue the day they flew into my garden, for I am the one with the squishing rock, the stinging spray, and the ants are who live in my garden which happily eat them.
I don’t really know where they came from, considering I hadn’t had any issues with squash bugs all season until literally today. I will be very vigilant for the next couple of weeks as my new pumpkin plants are still too small to really take any damage, and those beetles can wreak havoc within days.
I did have fun squishing probably 80% of them I saw crawling around, making the ants and flies super happy (seriously the ants were like tearing them apart and dragging the bits off...it was kind of disturbing). My spray should keep them away for now, if they come back, they don’t seem to care for my strong brew of jalapeño, garlic, onion, and sage, which has been in the hot garage all summer mostly unused.
