Aquaman Review
Aquaman is the sixth film in the DC extended universe and Aquaman’s first solo movie. The film is written and directed by James Wan and stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman. The film follows Arthur Curry (Momoa) and his journey to become the rightful king of Atlantis. Along the way he contends with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) who wants to rule Atlantis and unite the seven kingdoms to take on the surface world and destroy it. Right off the bat this is the most ambitious DC movie that’s been put to screen and for me that’s both a good aspect and a bad aspect. There are things I really enjoyed about Aquaman and there are aspects I didn’t like about this movie.
Let me rip the band-aid off and get the negatives out of the way first. My complaints that I levy with this film mostly have to do with the story and length of the film. Aquaman feels like many types of movies meshed into one big popcorn extravaganza and at points feels like one thing, but becomes something else in another scene. I don’t want to name specifics because I don’t want to give away spoilers, but the story at times seems like a jumbled mess. If some of these subplots were cut out, the run time would have been shortened and that would have improved the flow of the movie. There’s also a detailed Atlantis mythology built into this film that could detract viewers along with the many assemblance of characters that come and go throughout the film, simply put a viewer could lose track of everything that is going on.
What I enjoyed most about Aquaman were the characters, action scenes, and the look and feel of Atlantis. Jason Momoa is decent as Aquaman and is certainly more entertaining than Vinnie Chase Aquaman. The villains were cool with Orm and Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) along with the supporting Atlanteans. For me though the standout was Amber Heard as Mera, she is such a kick ass and awesome character who more often than not is the smartest person on screen. The action is well choreographed even if by the end it feels repetitive, but there’s a sequence in Italy that’s my favorite action scene in the movie. The way Atlantis looks and feels is of wonder and I give credit to the VFX team for bringing Atlantis to life on the big screen.
Aquaman is a small step in the right direction for the DCEU, even though it doesn’t hit that home run like Wonder Woman did. James Wan created a visually ambitious comic book movie that can work for some and not for others, for me I’m half and half with this film. There are aspects I really enjoyed and other aspects that left me scratching my head and being on the fence. With that being said, I enjoyed the movie for what it was despite the glaring issues it has. There’s a quote by Mera where she says, “You do your best thinking when you’re not thinking at all”. I find that this quote encapsulates this movie in a nutshell, go in and just have fun with Aquaman for what it is.
