With thanks to the @blackfashionhistorypodcast on Spotify for another fantastic episode exploring the life ands work of African American designer Zelda Wynn Valdez. If you love learning abour fashion history then I highly recommend having a listen. After starting her own dressmaking business in the 1930s, Zelda Wynn Valdez, opened the first black business on Broadway (1948) with her boutique 'Chez Zelda' selling figure hugging dresses to celebrities including movie star Dorothy Dandridge, opera diva Jessye Norman, and singer Gladys Knight. Valdes also dressed the entire bridal party for the 1948 wedding of Marie Ellington, aka Maria Cole and Nat King Cole and created a new look for singer Joyce Bryant dubbed the 'Black Marilyn Monroe' Zelda Wynn Valdez, however may be best known for designing the original Playboy bunny costume comissioned by Hugh Heffner for the Playboy playmates of the first Playboy club in 1960. #vintagewednesday Thrilled with the how this historically inspired longline corset turned out. A few years back I went to the Undressed exhibition at the V&A. Swipe across to the C1917 German Ersatz corset from the collection which initially inspired me for this piece. During WW1 with acute shortages of supplies across Europe substitute materials were used within corsetry. The original corset is made from woven paper twine. I loved the shape of this style. I made this longline corset in a bouquet pattern broche. I used a bigger waist reduction for a more dramatic shape. I love researching and looking to historical corsetry. I am trying to dedicate a day a week to personal projects like this. #waybackwednesday #vintagewednesday C1870s Black silk satin corset from the private collection of Stephanie Selmayr shown at the @conferenceofcorsetry back in August. . The corset is stiffened with corded panels used vertically in the front sections over the bust and horizontally over the hips. . Cording was a popular method often used in addition and as an alternative to whalebone. Cording was the application of sandwiching twisted cord (usually hemp, cotton or paper) between two layers of fabric. . As in the case of this example cording was also viewed as a design detail.
