Day 7:  #mayvinylchallenge : A Record With A Cool Story Or "A-Ha" Moment Every record has a story.  But not all stories are created equal. In this vinyl world, you got your high quality, your low quality, your expert, your novice, hi-fi, lo-fi and every other mixup.  But the groove is nothing to toy with. In this we take the toy, the groove and the quality and you have: 🔺️ Self - Gizmodgery [2000; 2015 Reissue] Simply put, the cool story behind this Matt Mahaffey classic is that the music was created with what would be musical toys.  No professional instruments were used.  Toy drums, toy piano, cheap kid keyboards and other various electronic toys.  Toys! Toys! Toys! ...and it friggin' RULES!! From the bouncy funk of "5 Alive", to the Jackson/Gibb-esque groove of "Pattycake", the brilliant toy-cover of the Doobie Brothers' "What A Fool Believes" and the humorous funk-romp of "Trunk Fulla Amps, "Gizmodgery" is proof positive that no matter the gear you possess, if you got a great idea and it makes a sound...you've got the capacity to get down! Day 4:  #mayvinylchallenge : Multiple Records With The Same Cover Theme  May the 4th Be With You...And Also With You! (Not Catholic, but I love a good kneeler.)  I had a few ideas:   • The Propped-Elbow (Thriller, Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, etc.  But since I didn't have that ALFONZO album, why?)  •  Cars (Previously done in a May Vinyl Challenge)  •  The Lucas-Spielberg Connection (Since it's May 4th, an esoteric tie between the partnership of Lucas and Spielberg via soundtracks.  It became convoluted)  So I kept it funky:  THE ZAPP "Keychain" LOGO  🔺️ Zapp [1980] 🔺️ Zapp II [1982] 🔺️ Zapp III [1983] 🔺️ The New Zapp IV U [1985]  Some bands are branded by their logo.  KISS, Van Halen, Cameo, etc.  Equally as strong was the logo of the Dayton-based band, ZAPP.  Much can be said about the talkbox-laden funk that Roger Troutman and Co. created...but we're talking about the visual art here!  On the debut artwork of Ronald "Stozo" Edwards and Overton Lloyd, the logo appears as its name in block-style.  A key on the front cover next to a diorama of what my kid brain thought were keychains, I dubbed the following releases as the "Keychain Logo."  For "ZAPP II", the logo is a large font with stars, a globe mosaic splash, encased in a "keychain" border (with the border changing from black to gold to chrome).  This logo was the style for the next three albums, created by various artists such as Laura LiPuma, J. Day 18:  #mayvinylchallenge :  Best Art | Best Package So many to choose...so many to display... But we keeps the first decision as the best around this house! 🔺️ Earth, Wind & Fire - All 'N All [1977] First off...JUST LOOK AT IT!!!  It's AMAZING!! Ok...on the stats... The eighth album from the Chicago-bred powerhouse R&B/Funk band, "All 'N All" features the artwork of Japanese artist Shusei Nagaoka.  Known for his airbrushed fantasy-scapes of futurism, the album displays Nagaoka's hybrid blend of an Egyptian pyramid into a futuristic cityscape with angular buildings and rockets aimed for the heavens. The gatefold does not disappoint, as it features a showpiece of unity, as per the band's motif ("we study all kin kinds of sciences, astrogy, mysticism, religion, so forth...").  With images from various religions, icons, and the spiritual mascot instrument, the Kalimba, the stormy angel-clad lightningstorm represents a host of beliefs and ideologies based under a theme of togetherness. Since I saw this album in my parent's collection back in the late 80s, I was drawn to it.  Upon my dad playing "Serpentine Fire" for me, I was sold on the music as well! Nagaoka's artwork was a staple of the late 70s and early 80s album art, as well as commercial art.  From Parlet to Deep Purple, and several EWF albums, his futuristic airbrushing gave a visual landscape to each project, with a linking tie-in to the music at hand. Day 10:  #mayvinylchallenge : Reminds You Of Your Family | Parent | An Heirloom There are many records that remind me of my parents, Warren and Bernadine. But the two presented here are indicative of each respectively: 🔺️ Sly and the Family Stone - Stand! [1969] An artistic high point, Stand was a critical and commercial success for the San Francisco band. Featuring hits like the "I Want To Take You Higher", "Everyday People" and the title track, the album as a whole has ZERO weak points. Top to bottom, an amazing record. This album reminds me of my dad, with it being among his favorites. The kind of record I've seen him know a vast majority of the lyrics to. When he noticed me going through the records as a child, it might have even been recommended. 🔺️ The Pointer Sisters - Break Out [1983] Released after the success of the trio's single "I'm So Excited", the original '83 version of the album doesn't contain it, and that is the one I recall. Featuring era-laden electro-dance jams like "Jump", "Neutron Dance" and the ultra-too-dopeness of "Automatic", "Break Out" was the Pointer Sisters at their commercial peak. This reminds me of my mom based on the fact that nine times out of ten, it was her bringing the records into the house. I recall when this album came into the house around early '84. Along with other records in family history, it was her bringing them in. And that's huge. Happy Mother's Day to All the Mothers Out There! Day 31:  #mayvinylchallenge :  First and Last Album In Your Collection By Genre Or However You Organize First, let me say that I have mad amounts of respect for all of you.  A lot of you have very well-put organizations, and interesting ones as well.  Shout out to you all for putting forth that effort. As for your boy...well...not so much. As a scatter-brained musician/artist type, I could possibly be fitted into that whole "artists are messy" stereotype.  So what's my organization method? CHAOS. Everything is Everywhere.  Plain and simple.  So I looked HARD left and then HARD right...and the bookends were: 🔺️ Prince - 1999 [1982] 🔺️ Mac Demarco - Another One [2015] Much like my musical training...it always starts with Prince.  His fifth studio album is the breakthrough to the mainstream, with his innovative sound and fashion.  Also, alongside Michael Jackson, he was one of the first black artists to be played in regular rotation on early MTV. For the end, Mac Demarco's second mini-LP was a one-man band situation, recorded in his home.  The sound is pure Demarco, a bit of quirk...a lot of heart...and a production style all his own.  And there you have it. Day 30:  #mayvinylchallenge :  90s Day!  Album From 30 Years Ago 30 years ago I was a very different person.  In 1992, I was primarily a CD convert.  The excitement of said product for me was insane.  You mean this little silver thing has music on it and it gets played with a friggin' LASER!?!?  Sign me up! Needless to say there was little vinyl coming into the home at the time.  And even later when I started to acquire old favorites, I was (and still am) slow to getting things from this era.  However, my mind flashed back to my older brother bopping in with a record in that era that I still have.  Thus, this is the choice: 🔺️ Jodeci - Come And Talk To Me (12" Single) [1992] The 4th single from their debut album "Forever My Lady", "Come and Talk To Me" was a number one R&B hit, going Gold.  Written and produced by Al B. Sure! and Jodeci member DeVante Swing, the original song is an early 90s mid-tempo jam, laden with powerful drum machine hits and digital keyboards galore. However, the magic for me truly lies within the Radio and Hip Hop Remixes of the track, produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs.  Incorporating the "Impeach The President" drum break, a rap by Fat Doug and a woman moaning passionately, the remix was a total vibe, one which got played in my house moreso than the original. Shout out to McGiggles for finding the top I am wearing.  It is my hoodie...but I haven't worn it in over 20 years.  Lawd... Day 29:  #mayvinylchallenge :  Soundtrack Sunday 🔺️ Frank Zappa - 200 Motels [1971] "This whole event is a fantasy that occurred touring on the road... Touring can make you crazy, ladies and gentlemen. That is precisely what 200 Motels is all about." A lot can be said about this surreal cult classic.  One of the first films to be shot entirely on videotape and THEN transferred to 35mm film, the look is beyond unique.  Shot almost like a television special, the movie was shot in 5 days.  Featuring the brand-new lineup of The Mothers (featuring Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of the Turtles (later, Flo and Eddie), Aynsley Dunbar, George Duke, and a gem of a performance by chauffeur/bass player Martin Lickert), as well as Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Theodore Bikel and original Mothers, Jimmy Carl Black, "Motorhead" Sherwood, and Don Preston, the movie is a Zappa wonderland, mixing mental musings, glimpses into the groupie scene (shout out to Janet Neville-Ferguson and Lucy Offerall), the real life conversations of the band along with the music, played by the band and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. There's a lot of layers to this movie in regards to it's back-story.  Maybe I should make it a WAXING VINYL episode.  Just maybe... Alls I know is that it is one of my favorite films simply because of its unorthodox manner in every regard, and the amazing music.  And I truly believe in the overall message, as I have experienced it... Touring Can Make You Crazy... I'M STEALING THE ROOOOOOM!!!!!! Day 28:  #mayvinylchallenge :  Strange Play!  Shaped | Hidden Tracks, Etc. There is always one where you can't fulfill it correctly. I have very little uniquely shaped records, and I have already shown off the AIR "Sexy Boy" Monkey Vinyl TOO many times.  And if I have a record with hidden tracks...I don't know it yet (oftentimes, I've bought more than I've had time to listen to...) However...strange is strange...and it is in the the eye of the beholder.  So to me, the record is only strange in the sense of it's premise and purpose overall.  So not strange...beautifully unique. 🔺️ Suzanne Ciani - Xenon [2021] Released in 1980, Xenon is a now-classic pinball machine game.  Revolutionary for its time, the Greg Kmiec-created machine featured the musical talents of pianist/synthesist/composer Suzanne Ciani.  With microchip expansion being realized by this time, the ability to add more complex waveforms and samples were available.   Ciani used this to her and the game's advantage, utilizing the Synclavier sampling synthesizer and her voice box device to create a split-apart soundtrack and voice direction narration, based on the bumpers and various areas of the pinball game itself. Heard for the first time outside of the pinball machine, the record shows off all of the work that Ciani did for the machine, rightfully gaining her an induction in the Pinball Expo Hall of Fame.
