Los Angeles is a microcosm of innovative American music. It is home to much of the nation’s best psych punk, hip-hop, jazz, electronic, and experimental music. Los Angeles artists are constantly absorbing cross-genre influences and evolving their musical style to keep up with audiences’ varied tastes. Vinyl Williams embodies the spirit of Los Angeles’s diversity with their latest release, Brunei. Their sound is a nebulous psych rock grounded by punchy, syncopated rhythms. Their unique style relies not on phased-out guitar riffs, but on breathy vocals that float over impressionistic chords from the synthesizer. Both the vocals and synth are counterpointed by distinguished, jazzy drumming. Vinyl Williams keeps their song structures interesting by unexpectedly modulating keys and incorporating unusual tonalities: the chorus of "Riddles of the Sphinx" is made of four major 11th chords that descend chromatically. Brunei is a colorful nimbus, a celebration of sounds that stand apart by blending together.
