saw guillermo del toro's frankenstein last night and i wanted to post some of my thoughts w/o any spoilers bc ive been excited about this movie for literally years lol
it departs from shelley's novel in some major ways, but it also feels devoted to the structure and energy of the novel in a way that frankenstein adaptations rarely do. while sometimes these play into some of del toro's pet themes around war and industry, very often they still do dovetail with shelley's themes.
best thing i can say about this movie is that even with some major alterations from the novel, it feels like shelley’s voice. nobody should forget that frankenstein was written by a teenage girl!
seeing oscar isaac as victor is (pardon the pun) electrifying. he's absolutely manic, and they play a subtle othering in association with his heritage, which i can only imagine is the work of the imagination of a young mexican boy reading this novel born of the european upper crust and finding himself in words like "dark-haired".
i appreciated that the film took this kinda surface level look at frankenstein "what if the monster.. wasn't The Monster" (which i dont think IS actually shallow despite what people say) but they add this thick layer of psychosexuality atop it
like the creature is an innocent, elordi's performance kind of moving between baby ape and child, but when there are those extremely charged scenes with elizabeth where they have this connection, he doesn't suddenly grow up and become acceptably adult
like its down to the letter, classically oedipal
one final quote that really stuck with me, and i kept thinking about as i watched GDT's attempted opus (metatextually mirroring victor's mania? okay okay i'll stop)
