Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past few weeks, I'm sure you've all come to terms with the fact that Baauer's Harlem Shake has become more than just a viral youtube sensation, it's a cultural phenomenon. Speaking of culture, none of the dancers in any of the 'Harlem Shake' videos are honoring the cultural dance that hit Harlem streets and dance floors alike in the early 80s. Earlier today (in Bauuer's first AMA on Reddit), this was addressed in the first reply I read:
As someone who is more familiar with the harlem shake being a staple move on the dance floor, this was a question that had been stuck in my mind since Baauer's Harlem Shake became a virtual reality. Mr. Rodrigues' (baauershake) response to the question was everything you could imagine coming from an artist who has skyrocketed to the top of the world's playlist within weeks. Acquiring an undeniable amount of admiration from countless fans everywhere, the man is simply flattered. Despite my position on dance floor politics, Baauer has the right idea. He makes it clear in his retort to Nahstarr that he is elated with the fact that he is getting a positive reaction from his listeners. In my opinion, that's the only way anyone can gain as big of a following as this booming music producer. Create music to generate a song and dance for people to connect with.
