Viratka - Waterbending Guardian of the Wushumu (雾树木 - fog trees) Mountains
Viratka was originally from the Southern Water Tribe born in 16 BG, her father (Ulak) was a great fisherman who later moved his ailing wife (Kasa) and Viratka to the Northern Water Tribe to pursue better business and medical attention for his wife. Viratka was 13 when they moved to the North and at age 16 she began secretly courting, Katoq, the son of a local fur-trader. However, according to Nothern traditions, Viratka was set to be married and was forcibly engaged to a boy two years older than her, Takor. When Katoq found out they agreed to run away back to the South. But they were caught and Katoq was imprisoned. Viratka, however, was banished from the North because she'd humiliated Takor and his family who were related to the Chief. With her father's business ruined and shame hanging over her, Viratka knew she couldn't face her family and fled to the Earth Kingdom. There she settled in a small village below the Wushumu Mountains and became Lanjing (岚精 - Misty Spirit/Essence). She was thought to be a non bender until the year 10 AG, when the Fire Nation came to invade the Earth Kingdom. She died in battle against the Fire Nation at the age of 26. But due to her deep connection to the spirits, in 12 AG she returned to the Wushumu Mountains as it's spirit guardian.
Notes: - Viratka learned most of her spiritual bending and history in the North but began learning at a very young age in the South - Katoq gave her a betrothal necklace on the day of their attempted escape - While living in the Wushumu village, her fruits, vegetables, and plants grew the most plentiful, she always lied and claimed it must have been the spirit of the mountain when it was truly her water bending - Some of the villagers believed she had to be a spirit because of how much her garden grew - Viratka learned multiple styles of bending and incorporated them into her own - Viratka learned blood bending but accidentally killed an animal in the process and refused to attempt it again - The Wushumu village was one of the first to fall to the Fire Nation - Viratka, as the spirit guardian in 20 AG, drove out the Fire Nation from the village - The carved charm on her betrothal necklace was shattered and burned during the fire nation attack - She greatly mourns the fact that she couldn't be there to protect her people when the Fire Nation imprisoned water benders in the South - Toph and Viratka met briefly in 165 AG - She had a crush on Sokka when she met him in his early thirties - She befriended and briefly held feelings for Zuko during his travels through her mountain while in Republic City
Y’all have no idea how much effort I put into creating this character. I looked up dates and the timeline, I looked for the proper names and to see if my events would even be possible. I did my best to create a fitting name for her using Kanji characters like they would in the real series. I even looked at geography to put the mountain in a place that made sense but wouldn’t interfere or directly conflict with the events in the series. I did a study of the clothes and culture of the Southern and Northern water tribes to make sure I got the story right and possible.
So much effort, and I love her so much. I’d love to rp her one day maybe.
