Ready to go awwww? Ready to cry? Cuz this chapter has both! @goodieghosty
Hey Virgil, you didn’t have any memories when you met remy and Emile, right? How’d you pick out your name?
Virgil: Yes. Well, my name means ‘staff bearer’ and well...
(Virgil pulls a quarterstaff from his and Remus’s bag of holding.)
Virgil: I was found with this. And Remy did call me ‘Vigilance’ for a while with how much I worried over Logan, that stuck and was just shortened to Virgil.
Can I go back to when Virgil was young, before he lost his memories?
You travel back, likely farther in time than you meant to.
Everything’s dark, you can’t much of anything. And the ambient noise you didn’t even realize you were hearing with Wagon and Co in the forest is gone, and all that’s left is silence. Pure silence
Eventually, you see a faint light far away and even from that, you recognize that you are actually in a rocky cave-like passage, and it is slightly bigger than you expect a passage to be, if just marginally.
You see in the faint light that there is a figure that is accompanying the light, though they are still too far away to tell their feature
Before the light gets close enough to see who the figure is for sure, however, the light winks out and everything is plunged into darkness once more, this is accompanied with a small sound, likely from the figure.
Though you can’t see the figure, you get the distinct feeling that they’re still moving forwards despite the darkness. Time feels like it’s stretching in the darkness, as before you had become acclimated to the darkness, but the light had reset any hope of seeing anything in the dark, if you even could.
Finally after what feels like too long, another light comes on, and you’re very suddenly moving in tandem with the figure as he runs along the passage.
In the new light, you can now see who’s the owner of the lights you’ve anticipated.
You see a drow boy that you recognize very quickly as Virgil. He looks much younger than when you last saw him, he couldn’t be more than somewhere between 6-9 years in human standards, and you have no idea what age he could be in elf years as elves mature much slower than humans. He is also wearing what appears to something of a toga-like garment, though concerningly, it is riddled with a plethora of tears and rips, with one of the rips aligning perfectly with a cut you can see sluggishly bleeding on Virgil arm. Virgil doesn’t appear to be concerned with the cut though, perhaps he may not even feel it or know it’s there.
His white hair is draping down his face in places, but Virgil doesn’t appear to even notice as he continues to dash towards his destination. His expression is one of determination, but mixed with that is a fair bit of fear and uncertainty.
You realize that the silence is somewhat strange, as if there’s something you’re missing. You remember hearing a small sound before and you can Virgil’s breath, though it is quite soft for the amount of running you have seen Virgil doing.
The one thing you realize you aren’t hearing is Virgil’s feet hitting the rocky floor, though you vaguely remember something about Fae being very light on their feet, so you brush the lack of sound off as just that.
Virgil looks back a handful of times as he continues down the passage, and you get the feeling that he isn’t just running to something, but that he’s actively running away from something.
Time feels stretched as Virgil feels like he’s been running for eternity, when you look ahead and realize that you can finally see a light that isn’t coming from the floating orbs of light around Virgil.
Of course, as you realize this, the aforementioned lights around Virgil wink out. However, in the much fainter light ahead of you, you see that Virgil doesn’t seem to be making any move to make another.
As Virgil realizes how close he may be to the end of the passage, he speeds up. Unfortunately, this is to his detriment, as from your very faint ability to see, Virgil snags the tiniest of rocks jutting out of the floor and slams into the ground with the loudest sound you’ve heard in the vision yet.
Virgil lets out the tiniest of whimpers as he immediately goes to pull himself up, though you can tell the fall definitely winded him.
But before Virgil can full get up, you hear something coming from down the tunnel, where Virgil just came from. A hellish shriek that grates your ears.
Virgil’s eyes widen in fear as he suddenly doubles his effort to pull himself up, and runs faster than you’ve seen as he desperately sprints to the end of the passage.
Another shriek rings through the passage behind Virgil as he darts out of the passage to something you know you’ve never seen before.
In front of Virgil is a gigantic glowing mass of various types of mushrooms and fungi, glowing various colors in places, but over all, a green glow purveys the scene.
In contrast to the fairly cramped feeling of the passage, the area that Virgil is in now feels as if there’s no ceiling, but what you see in front of you leaves no doubt in your mind where you are. The only place where something like this could be, and also where a vast majority of any drow is born and live in.
The Underdark.
Virgil doesn’t waste anytime looking at the glowing spectacle in front of him though, but instead runs with focused precision towards a giant crag or pure black stalactite rock that funnily enough looked much like a fang. As if the cave was biting into the hulking mass of fungus from above.
As Virgil runs towards the rock, the ground beneath his feet slowly transitions from plain rock to slowly creeping fungus until at the base of the rock, there’s no visible rock anywhere around Virgil.
Just before Virgil can hurl himself into the closet hidey hole in the rock, you hear the shriek like before, but you recognize that it is definitely coming in the large expanse of the greater cave, as the sound bounces in an echo through the cave.
At the sound, Virgil nearly falters, almost freezing in fear, but in a last ditch attempt to get to a place to hide in the rock, Virgil throws himself faster and quickly into the most obscure gouge in the rock, curling up in it and silently crying.
Neither of you took the chance to look at what emerged, but if Virgil was this scared and desperate to get away, perhaps it’s not something you probably want to see.
Unfortunately, even if you wanted to see what happens next, the vision fades as you hear the sounds of whatever’s out there get closer and closer and closer...
