I tend to write season 2 around Laurance and Virgil's relationship being a little (a lot) doomed
Virgil waited when he disappeared into the Irene dimension. They moved to New Meteli to help Cadenza and keep his memory alive, and when he came back, they decided to resume their courier work so they would never be afraid he'd disappear again could travel alongside him.
Virgil is running an errand for either Cadenza or Levin when Laurance, Katelyn, and Aphmau depart. They agree to meet them at an agreed-upon spot, and they completely lose it when they don't arrive. They catch up to the group in Scaleswind and feel awful that they weren't there to stop Michi or the wolf kingdom. Laurance swears it's alright, that he would much rather they have been safe than in that mess too. Cold comfort.
So the rest of the season goes as normal. Adventuring all over Ru'aun and Gal'ruk, chasing down answers with Aphmau, and it seems fine for a while. Until Laurance starts to hear the Call. He keeps it to himself for as long as he can - he doesn't want to frighten his partner - but Virgil isn't blind. They know something's wrong.
And then he disappears. Again.
Their relationship is tragic because they keep trying to make it work when fate itself is working against them. They keep fighting tooth and nail to have a little bit of peace, and every time they have it within their reach, it evaporates.
And maybe in another time and another place, they could make it work. But right now, the stars cannot align.
