You Don’t Want This
This Self-Negotiated Project started out life as a personal documentation of the stretch of Clyde Shore near to where I live. I became more and more dismayed by the rubbish and pollution that I found there and wanted to find a way of bringing to people’s attention. A lot of the rubbish consists of items that people have flushed down their toilets instead of correctly disposing of and/or recycling them. Some is dropped by people who simply can’t be bothered to carry their own rubbish home. This should be a beautiful bit of coastline, and the beach should be usable by local people for recreation and relaxation purposes without having to worry about hazardous waste. I tried to highlight the issue by showing the waste with the aesthetic considerations that I would apply to something I naturally found to be beautiful. I explored the aesthetic effect of organisation, collection and isolation on the litter. I created installations to highlight the volume of the litter and to draw attention to its existence. I spoke to people who used the beach and who took the time to clear up other people’s mess. The Self-Negotiated Project has come to an end but the project is still ongoing. This Tumblr blog is limited to my outputs for coursework as part of my degree but my own personal projects are documented elsewhere and if you are interested in seeing how “You Don’t Want This” progresses, feel free to follow its continuing development over on http://kp-edition.tumblr.com
