The blue dragon growled as she laid her head down on the ground, staring at the bodies of the three dragon slayers who had attacked her. She breathed heavily. One of them had managed to wound her side, she needed a moment to recover before she moved on. She lifted her head to look at the wound and she started to lick it.

Thomas tipped his head up so he could meet the shadowy creature’s dazzling red gaze. To him she seemed imposingly, impossibly tall – but familiar too, somehow. Not just in shape and smell, but intelligence. He had heard the rumors about her. Knew that she was said to possess the same, subtly advanced communication skills as himself. But now it was time to see if those rumors were true.

“Your talons look quite sharp,” he began admiringly, using the common trills and grunts of his species. “So do your teeth. But what about your tongue? Is that sharp, too?”

And then, in the deep and friendly resonance of a human being, he asked –

“Can you really speak the language of our makers?”
