Jay One Ramier visited the Bronx Art Collective to speak about his life and artistic practice. We met Jay while visiting the hip hop artist collective RStyle in Paris last summer and were excited to host him at DreamYard.
You can read a biography about Jay One on Wide Walls:
“Jay One Ramier is an artist born in Guadeloupe. He stands for the first generation of European Graffiti writers from the early 80’s, that transformed the New York influence to something new with an old world sensibility. Jay One, or Black Picasso, as he likes to call himself, is considered as one of a pioneer graffiti artist in the French capital. For this artist, born in the West Indies, art of graffiti is an inexhaustible space in which he expresses his will of freedom and other emotions. Coming from a working class background, a feeling of frustration is often emphasized in his artworks.”
Jay One gave a talk about his process and spoke about how he makes work “outside” on the streets and “inside” in his studio, and the different tracks that influence his work.
DreamYard’s Bronx Art Collective youth then engaged Jay One in a Q+A session and afterward he led a graffiti workshop. You can see more of Jay One’s work at www.jayramier.com
