The #VistaraRetroJet - a tribute to 150 years of the Tata group
The #VistaraRetroJet – a tribute to 150 years of the Tata group
Saturday, September 1st was a blustery and rainy day at New Delhi’s IGI airport. However, the excitement and warm hospitality by the team members of Vistara and their agency Avian, removed any gloom from the minds of us aviation geeks and press present for the occasion.
Vistara, the brand of the Tata SIA Airlines joint venture of the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, was unveiling its 22nd and…

Delhi-based airline Vistara introduced a new program in March aimed at ensuring the comfort and safety of women flying solo. #VistaraWomanFlyer allows women traveling alone the option to request specific seats, and also provides baggage and transportation assistance and even escorts to walk women to taxis. If a flier doesn’t request a certain seat, the airline will still ensure she receives either a window or an aisle position, rather than a middle seat. Sanjiv Kapoor, Vistara’s chief strategy and commercial officer, told HuffPost in a statement that the airline’s initiative is based on “intuitive thoughtfulness,” noting many of its solo female travelers request assistance. “One of our core values is ‘intuitive thoughtfulness.’ We observed the preferences of solo women travellers on our flights, and noticed that they often sought assistance on ground upon arrival at their destinations, mostly either regarding their baggage or to reconfirm the safest and most reliable options for airport transfers. Some even shared their feedback with us that they would like proactive assistance on arrivals, both with luggage and with ground transport/ booking of taxi, especially at night. As part of this optional service, solo women travelers are not assigned middle seats, again based on feedback and intuitive thoughtfulness.” Vistara currently flies domestic routes in India, but has plans to expand and “intends to provide this service on international flights,” according to CNN
Vistara’s Last Flight Marks Full Merger with Air India, Creating a Single Full-Service Carrier
Final Flight and Transition
Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, is set to operate its final flight under its own brand on November 11, signaling a complete integration with Vistara Air India. This transition marks a significant moment for Indian aviation as Vistara’s operations, network, and customer base merge with Air India, consolidating the two carriers under a unified brand. Starting November 12, Air India will fully take over Vistara’s services, streamlining the airline’s operations and expanding its reach as a single full-service carrier in India. The merger, announced in 2022, also grants Singapore Airlines a 25.1% stake in the newly unified airline, marking its investment in the future of Indian aviation under the Air India brand.
The transition process has been in the works for several months, with both Vistara Air India working together to ensure a seamless shift for passengers and staff. Cross-functional teams from both Vistara and Air India have coordinated on aircraft, crew, and ground operations to create a smooth experience for travelers during the brand transition. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson expressed optimism about the merger, noting that the expanded network and fleet will offer passengers more choices and a broader range of services.
Impact on India’s Aviation Landscape
The integration of Vistara Air India narrows India’s roster of full-service carriers to a single player. This is a considerable shift for the Indian aviation sector, which has seen multiple full-service carriers emerge and fade over the past 17 years. In 2012, the UPA government introduced liberalized policies allowing foreign airlines to own up to 49% in domestic carriers, paving the way for joint ventures like Vistara and AirAsia India. Vistara, founded as a collaboration between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, has now come full circle by merging into Tata-owned Air India, marking the end of an era for such partnerships in the Indian airline industry.
With the completion of this merger, Vistara will cease its independent operations and begin functioning entirely under the Air India brand. Customers had been gradually restricted from booking flights with Vistara from September 3, 2024, for travel dates on or after November 12, signaling the phased approach leading up to this full merger. This integration aligns with Air India’s broader ambitions to emerge as a global full-service airline, capable of offering a vast network both domestically and internationally.
The Future of the Unified Airline
For the unified airline, this merger represents an opportunity to expand and elevate India’s aviation standards. Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan remarked that the merger would enhance the travel experience by leveraging an expanded fleet and a more comprehensive route network. The unified airline under the Air India brand is expected to draw upon Vistara’s premium service ethos while expanding Air India’s international and domestic reach. With Singapore Airlines as a minority stakeholder, Air India aims to bolster its service quality and global competitiveness through strategic resources and expertise from its partners.
This merger is emblematic of the evolving dynamics in India’s aviation sector, where consolidation and strategic investments are becoming central to growth. The journey of Vistara from a promising joint venture to a brand absorbed into one of India’s legacy airlines underscores a shift toward unified services under fewer brands, designed to enhance operational efficiencies and customer experiences. As Vistara bids farewell, India’s aviation industry looks forward to a new chapter of unified, full-service offerings under the Air India brand.

Strengthening Fleet Modernization Efforts
Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has unveiled its latest order of 100 Airbus aircraft, comprising 10 A350 widebody and 90 A320 Family single-aisle planes. This order adds to the 250 Airbus aircraft previously purchased in 2023, bringing the airline’s total Airbus orderbook to 344. Air India’s fleet modernization strategy aims to meet the demands of India’s rapidly growing aviation market. Six A350-900s have already been delivered, and the airline’s first A350 operations began in January 2024, marking the entry of this advanced widebody aircraft into India.
The decision to expand the fleet aligns with Air India’s “Vihaan.AI” transformation plan. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, emphasized the potential for growth, stating, “India’s improving infrastructure, aspirational youth, and global connectivity demands provide a clear case for expanding Air India’s fleet beyond the 470 aircraft ordered last year.” Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the alignment with Tata’s vision for Air India’s growth.
Innovative Aircraft for Modern Aviation Needs
The newly ordered Airbus A350 and A320neo Family aircraft are designed to improve operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. The A350, a leader in the widebody segment, boasts a 25% reduction in fuel consumption, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions compared to older models. With a range of up to 9,700 nautical miles, the A350 can handle ultra-long-haul routes while offering superior passenger comfort.
Complementing the widebody addition is the A321neo, part of the A320neo Family, which offers over 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous single-aisle aircraft. Featuring innovative Sharklet technology and advanced engines, the A321neo is tailored to maximize performance and range. Its spacious cabin design also ensures a comfortable travel experience for passengers.
Enhanced Maintenance Services for Fleet Optimization
To support its expanding fleet, Air India has signed a Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) contract with Airbus. This agreement guarantees high levels of aircraft availability and operational cost savings through integrated component services. The package includes on-site stock at Delhi, access to Airbus’ regional spares pools, and repair and engineering services for replaceable parts.
FHS-C reflects Airbus’ commitment to reliability, with the company being the leading provider of A350 power-by-the-hour maintenance services globally. For Air India, this partnership ensures optimized fleet performance as the airline scales its operations in domestic and international markets.
With this strategic investment in modern aircraft and cutting-edge maintenance solutions, Air India is poised to strengthen its position as a global aviation leader while connecting India with the world more efficiently.
