(1) How is mental health and illness depicted in society?
(2) What messages about mental health and illness are displayed through these depictions?
(3) What does this mean to me?/ How does this affect me?
(4) What implications does this have for counselors and psychologists working with individuals with mental health problems?
(1) I think many times it’s depicted as middle aged moms who “don’t feel up” to doing things they used to, homeless people muttering to themselves or single adults in the city who are functioning but definitely in their own little world
(2) I think it sets pre determined expectations for what mental illness should look like and who is effected by it.
(3) I know I have been prejudice against friends who reported depression in college bc I was in the mindset that we’re all going through crappy schedules and no sleep and they were being dramatic. Currently my fiancé is dealing with anxiety issues that haven’t been dealt with medically. He refuses to go to the dr for a regular check up or look into it further.
(4) People feel like they don’t want to bring it up, they’ll deal with it on their own because they don’t want to be labeled or grouped with people they don’t want to associate with. That being said, you can’t treat / diagnose people that don’t want or seek help.
