Black Plum
(vitex doniana)
Also known as West African plum
Not to be confused with diospyros australis, planchonella australis, prunus domestica, prunus nigra or syzygium cumini which, among other names, also go by black plum
Native to Africa, specifically the Afrotropical zone, black plum trees primarily grow in dense forests. They love the heat, withstanding temperatures up to 36°C and shading people from it with its big leafy crown. The fruits tend to fall from the tree when ripe, but since it doesn't damage them people tend to wait for this rather than picking them off the tree. The flavour of the black plum is quite sweet and prune-like, with a slightly mealy texture and it's used to make jam, syrup and wine. They can also be dried and mixed with leaves and bark to make ink. The seeds are used to make coffee or oil, the latter can be used in skin cream, resin and paint production, the leaves are used to make tea and the twigs can be used to clean the teeth.
