I am absolutely behind the minimum wage increases in Ontario and other places and feel like it's long overdue. But at the same time I have a hard time finding sympathy for people losing their paid breaks, etc. I used to work for a large sporting goods chain where we only got 1 unpaid 30 minute break only if we worked an 8 hour shift and I was expected to train new hires who were making as much as me when I had been there 2/3 years. They did a lot of shady shit too.
Its a lot more nuanced than that though. A lot of the time the employer has to pay for the breaks either due to provincial or municipal law or if the worker is on call while they’re having lunch.
I don’t get why people aren’t disappointed that people are losing their benefits like this. Where’s the solidarity with other workers? People should be calling for more benefits, not having no sympathy as others lose theirs.
You are at work; you should be paid for your entire time at work. That’s what I feel.
