What the Sky Is, by Barbara Daniels
1 Late nights after classes I talk baseball, our driver known for falling asleep, letting the bus slip into a ditch. A man who knows music talks Sinatra. We spell each other, keeping the bus on the turnpike but flailing a little ourselves. My hinges rattle. I study the sequence of shadows.
2 My dream-mother screams from the back of a car that I drive off a bridge into waves. Red strobes swing toward me, sirens shrieking and squalling.
3 I don’t mean to run lights, cars in my wake, trucks honking, scared bicyclist braking. My mother blue water. A blind branch thrashes my windshield.
4 A woman forces the door of a Ford no one’s driven since June. It’s dirty as a slattern’s dress. The woman must bruise herself with that wanting. What the sky is: Mom’s hand trembling. What the dirt is: holy ground. I lie in a red bed, moon at the window gently rocking.

okay and those dreams were SO vivid, too. (though that isn’t surprising bc i dream vividly pretty much every night and am an experienced lucid dreamer). but seriously like i think i was SWEATING when i woke up from them it was so bad AGHHH and i can’t stop thinking about either of them, like i can see their worst moments in my mind rn. why would my brain put me through such emotional turmoil IN MY SLEEP??! like why do bad dreams/nightmares even exist who came up with this shit.
I dreamt that I kept hitching rides to and from the grocery store to get more cereal with my birthday money. I ran into a guy who had modded his car 'to go over 300 miles per hour' and had created a locking rollercoater bar for his seats. I rode in the back of his tactical suv and kept dozing off and then he said something that reminded me of a something 'I used to do'. So I told him how when me and my sister were little we would go to the store with my dad and leave to pick things up from other isles and then find him and scream really loud 'for fun' when we found him again and he hated it. The guy laughed and then we passed a stack of giant cereal boxes on the left side of the freeway. It was 2 boxes tall with 4 on bottom and 3 on top. I only got good details of the last one on the top row which was a Frosted Flakes box that just had the word "Otaku" printed onto the bowl of cereal. Then some traffic hit so we slowed down by some tree work. They were cutting the tops off these huge trees and one got twisted in some electrical wire. Everyone was yelling "Oooohhhhh" out the window and then as the guy did a move to start fixing it people started chanting "Tree! Tree! Tree! Tree!" And then he did one move that made it perfectly stack and everyone lost it. Like a goal at a sportsball event. I thought 'faith in humanity restored' and woke up.
