Today is a great time to be watching this map because employment is on the rise. This visualization clearly illustrates the 2007 financial crash and its repercussions years later. Valerie Lechene
This map display the evolution in race and ethnicity per census block from 2000 to 2010 based on the Census Bureau’s data set. For any person familiar with New York and some of its famous communities (Chinatown, Harlem) it outlines their location and evolution with clarity. Valerie Lechene
Les armes à feu, l’avortement, l'immigration... Une kyrielle de sujets divisent les Américains et influencent leur vote. Mais comment expliquer cet important clivage dans les valeurs fondatrices du pays? Portrait des Nations-Désunies d’Amérique.
This map takes a critical look at the USA, subdividing it into 11 nations with their own histories and political orientation. While I think in actuality things are far more complex than our typical understanding of the USA with its 50 states, an alternative history is appreciable, especially as it builds a model to understand and strategize on current political issues. Even though I do not consider myself to be a “New-Netherlander”, I appreciate some of the statements made with this map: 1. Some countries are nation-states and some are not. 2. The USA has many nations. 3. These nations are different from state boundaries.
The formation of sovereign states was necessary at a given time and space, but are their boundaries still relevant? I would be keen on creating maps that further this question.

Despite having doubts about the accuracy of the real time data set it uses, this constantly updating map is interesting because it shows the following: 1. location of Facebook users; density of users at a specific points 2. content users shared with the app 3. interactions between users: where is the shared media read by other users.
I think facebook uses this map for marketing purposes and have a sense that the data set has been curated to show an even distribution of usage throughout the globe. My personal sense is that there are more users in America than in the rest of the world. I will be watching the map at night to see how it evolves.
