Ok, so

I Have Thoughts

I think Lotor had several governesses before Dayak, bc the previous ones couldn’t handle him. (Have y’all seen The Sound of Music? I think Lotor could cause the same amount of trouble as seven human children if he put his mind to it)

Anyway, Dayak is the last one, and the one to last the longest. She treats him as a person and not as a child, and she teaches him a lot (like discipline and patience) though her methods aren’t great.

(They keep Lotor alive through things that otherwise would have killed him.)

Ultimately, her relationship with Lotor is complicated, but I think she did care about him and did her best to prepare him in the only ways she could

This section is one where it was all about the color and lighting experimenting. First with the first page trying to convey the change in time while underwater, which took a bit. Then the next was with the contrast of the colors. 

Also for those wondering about Dayak’s hair, that was a thing I ended up on with some design stuff I did outside of mermay, and I ended up going with for this. I considered the shell being used as the hood she wears like in the show, but I liked the idea of the shell instead of the standard tail or tentacles more just because I like the idea of it being that prominent.

Alteans age every 10 human years. Allura is around 190 years old at this point since she spent 10,000 years not aging. Lotor was always going to age slower because his extra quintessence but no one expected him to age every 500 years. Lotor always wondered how Dayak survived it all.

Do you think little Lotor ever saw or read those stories where a motherless kid had a wicked step mom/potential stepmother but then the father falls in love with the governess/Nanny/ maid/etc instead? And then Lotor had this childhood hope that Zarkon would fall in love with Dayak and send Haggar away, and then everything would ok. Because even though Dayak wasn't perfect, she was still the closest thing to "mother" he had, and maybe then his father would be less cruel and he could have a shot at having a happy family.
