dante & vanitas Mémoire 26
That looks like such great fun. Say... Would you... Would you let me play too??
On Roland and Astolfo
What I assumed about Astolfo was that he disliked Roland because he was an overly friendly kind of guy.
Olivier’s line to Roland in chapter 18: “If you are gone, who do you think is going to keep Astolfo company?” led me to believe that Roland liked Astolfo well enough and was really friendly with him in a way that grated at his nerves. And that as the story progressed, Roland would…grow on Astolfo? It’s usually how it happens.
Except that’s not it. Their relationship isn’t like that at all.
Astolfo’s first thought when Roland is brought up isn’t “that annoying guy that keeps following me around being stupidly friendly”. No, that’s how Astolfo sees Roland:
Roland is looking down at him and scowling with distaste. He looks judgmental and angry and maybe even a little disgusted.
He looks different than when he threatened Olivier. Here, it’s like he is looking down at an enemy, like when he asked Noé if they killed the chasseur he and Vani took the clothes from in chapter 14.
Maybe Roland doesn’t just “keep Astolfo company”. Maybe it’s more something along the lines of “keeping an eye on him”, because Astolfo is a pretty volatile guy.
To give Astolfo this lasting impression of a guy he works with, what makes Roland look like this was either something big, or something that happens regularly enough.
Anyway, I don’t know what happened, maybe Astolfo did/other does something Roland disapproves of, but there seems to be more bad blood between them than I first thought
The image is kinda blurry but Astolfo is holding a smaller girl in his arms.
He probably had a little sister
That panel in the middle is the same one that appears in chapter 2. It’s the cogs/clockwork thing that appeared when the group was transported back in time.
Which means that, right before the parade arrived, they time travelled again. Yet, at the end of the chapter, it’s still snowing?
It could be that the Malnommen doesn’t transport just from one year to another. Maybe it’s random?
