Averoigne and Auvergne

When it comes to these two French provinces we have a bit of a…. situation. Back in chapter one, Noé, while in (our) France, said that he “lived shut away in the forests of Averoigne for ages [...] it’s terribly deep in the country.” and there is nothing wrong with this until the province of Auvergne is also mentioned in connection to the attacks of the “Beast of Gévaudan”, which also took place in (our) France.

As we know, Averoigne is Auvergne’s fictional counterpart, as in these two places  aren't supposed to exist at the same time but somehow they do. How? It seems a logical explanation that if Auvergne is in (our) France, then Averoigne - is in Altus.

Some thoughts and theories before the new chapter comes out

I would like to talk about the thing that’s been most on my mind lately and that is the de Sade family. Back in chapter 19, when Ruthven talked about grandpa de Sade, he gave us a piece of information which I misinterpreted the first time I read the chapter.

First time reading, I mistakenly thought he was talking about Noé but that makes no sense. Reading it again, I realized the actual meaning. So, at one point in his life, grandpa de Sade adopted a child to whom he later gave his title and property to. Who could this be? Without a doubt, I can say that this person is from an important, high-ranking family that we’re well familiar with – the de Sades. And I’m betting that the person in question is Louis and Dominique’s father (or mother, but I’m leaning more towards their father).

I had wondered why neither Domi or Louis have displayed abilities like their granfather’s since, as we’ve seen, vampires from the same clan have the same formula manipulation abilities. But this explains it – they’re simply not related.And this is an important piece of information.

And before you think I’m forgetting about her, let’s talk about Veronica. The fact that we’ve seen her abilities but not an ability from any other de Sade, makes me think that she may have been adopted into the family (that, and the fact that she looks nothing like Louis or Domi). It doesn’t seem that far fetched, right? Given the family’s history.

The last thing that I want to mention is something that’s been bothering me for a long time which concerns de Sade, aka The Shapless One, and Marquis Machina. Now the reference here is obviously Marquis de Sade. However, the thing that seriously bothers me about this is that Mochizuki basically split the name in two and gave it to two characters. Why would she do that? Well I have one idea – what if this is hinting that Marquis Machina is the Shapeless One? Think about it, the only way you could come to this conclusion is if you know the reference. Otherwise, you have nothing to connect these two characters with.

I feel that we have many things to discover about the de Sades and I honestly can’t wait to learn more about them!

A few posts have been made discussing Moreau as a character. My personal view of him is that of a rather interesting character. He may seem a bit generic and like comic relief at first but he’s not and I think that the last few pages before Moreau leaves proves this point. He is to be wary of. So far he appears to be predictable and unpredictable at the same time (at least to me).

Mochizuki has also kept a lot of similarities from the reference for the character (the novel ‘The Island of Dr. Moreau‘), which include:

Novel!Moreau - eminent physiologist (in London)

VnC!Moreau -  also an eminent physiologist  (in ???)

Novel!Moreau - fled to an island after his experiments had been publicly exposed

VnC!Moreau - went to Paris after begin expelled from the academy (where?) after a ‘certain scandal’

Both of their experiments involved experimentation on live animals (aka vivisection)

Novel!Moreau – wants to create humans from animals

VnC!Moreau – wants to create vampires

All these similarities may be important considering what happens to novel!Moreau – he gets murdered by one of his experiments that escapes his lab. But wait, there’s more. Not only does the experiment kill Moreau but it dies as well (they kill each other). This may well be foreshadowing of what might happen in VnC. It might be Vanitas, No. 71 (if he’s still alive), or any other of Moreau’s experiments but it’s a possibility.

You know what I found odd in ch10? After the ball was interrupted by the Charlatan attack, when Veronica caught up to Vanitas and Noé, she said: “It stinks like men. Stinks like humans.” Now, why the plural? Think back to our groups of ‘Charlatan’ for a second. While I think that Naenia could possibly be a vampire, what about the other two? They seem to be male and they look like they could could very well be two of Moreau’s experiments - especially the one with the cross (I swear, it’s the same cross the Chasseurs wear). But if they are, then that just raises more questions....
