The next evolution of interfaces will be the end of visual interfaces
Think about it.
Seriously. Is it easier to find a remote controller and push a button or to talk? Apple and his vocal assistant SIRI, marked a turning point towards a new way of interacting to our daily devices. Yes, XBOX and some other entertainment and navigation devices had much earlier introduced vocal commands.
But SIRI stands out because of its ability to (or being supposed to) be able to learn from your commands.
This opening the world to a new vision.
A vision where apps and devices are really intelligent and able to talk to you like humans. And this vision is not that far from becoming real daily life. But the main effect of this is that the more apps and devices will be able to better and better understand what we tell them the more we will dispense with visual interfaces.
That's because visual interfaces are things that are basically meant to help us find, control and interact with content. But in a world where content can be "asked" for and returned in a vocal or video way through a smart and intelligent system that's able to actually talk, you don't need them. Throughout these last years, given the importance of search features and visual interfaces in our daily lives they have started to be crafted in more and more detailed and nice-to-see manner. In some ways we could say that interfaces have gradually become a content by themselves. And that's the case of the totally useless Google doodle.
Getting rid of visual search and interaction interfaces could finally be the real chance to privilege content and focus are attention to that, rather than to the way we interact with it. (if) WHEN this happens maybe we won't be able to enjoy the latest Google doodle or be surprised by the cutting edge latest website design. But without the frills and artistic efforts to create the perfect interface (or the coolest) we will have taken back the Internet to its primary scope, the one it was born for: providing and sharing information.
