Can we just talk about how fucking brutal the Soda Popinski KO cutscene is?
This is something I've always noticed when watching Wii Punch Out gameplays, and now that I'm playing it and I just beat him I wanted to talk about it.
Like, in a game filled with funny and cartoony KOs, doesn't Soda Popinski stand out as a very harsh one? He doesn't go flying and get stuck in the ropes. He doesn't move in a funny way before going down. He doesn't even get a dramatic final punch with a slow mo camera. He just recieves a raw uppercut that I think even I felt it behind the screen, puts a face accompanied by a sound effect that makes it seem like he just got some amount of permanent brain damage, and then DROPS LIKE A ROCK (MAC EVEN LOOKS AT HIM LIKE "That was a good one wasn't it?" THAT MF KNOWS WHAT HE DID). I know in real boxing this is probably pretty tame, but I just think it feels slightly out of place in the world of punch out. I know they just wanted to make his cutscene include his "soda" in some way, so of course making him go to the floor was an easy way to lead into that. But still. I like to fixate on details like this.
Anyway but yeah, I just beat Soda, I retried until I managed to TKO him in round 1 because going into round 2 or 3 is almost a guaranteed KO for me/Mac. TD is definitively stepping things up, I'm retrying fights a lot more often, but I'm happy it's still challenging even if I have already defetead Mike Tyson. Let's see how long it takes me to complete the rest of the game.
