"Willing suspension of disbelief" equivalent for game mechanics?
I think there should be a game design term that was the equivalent of the "willing suspension of disbelief". Like "the willing involvement in the mechanics" or something like that.
Because in a similar way to how you need to accept some unrealistic parts of a story in order to be involved in it, you have to make an effort to engage with the mechanics of a videogame in order to enjoy it, for example: Learning to use the movements mechanics properly instead of just walking to every place, or experimenting with your attacks in fighting games instead of just spamming the same button until you win. Ignoring them, while possible, will just make your playthrough less fun. There's often discussion about how this involvement affects player's experience, but as far as I know it lacks a proper name like the one its narrative equivalent has.
I think a term for it would be very useful, since there's often discussion about videogames with fun mechanics that you aren't forced to use but make the game boring when they are left aside, and how that is either fault of the player or of the developers. Maybe it's not a fault of either side, but simply a case of a player with a different "Willing involvement with the mechanics". The same way some people can't get into very fantastical stories, not because the stories are bad or because they're bad readers, but because their willing suspension of disbelief is just pretty low.
