How does one audition for the voice cast?
Oh! Gosh, umm, big fan by the way. Love your blog. So! Auditions for current story stuff will appear here whenever I need new actors for the story. A lot less likely in the second set of the block, but we may need some people for Kari Zev, Rishkar, and so on.
But also, we are currently preparing to do Battle for Zendikar this year and we need a lot of voices! You can audition for any of those right here:

We’d love to have you and anyone else who might be reading. Come join us!

Hi Michaela! I'm a huge fan of your work and I just loved Seduce Me. I was wondering if you could explain how does one create a demo reel? I mean, most of the time when I hear demo reels it's filled with misc. settings and characters (most of the time original) and it kind of confuses me on how I should make one. Is it alright to try and develop different clipped scenes for a demo reel? And how do you go about making one. Thanks a bunch!
Hi cutie pie! <3 I’m very glad you like my work! <3
With demo reels, you need to be specific as to what kind of demo reel you want to make =) There are MANY types, such as:
Character
Commercial
Narration
Creature
Sound Effect (YES! THERE IS A LEGIT TYPE OF DEMO FOR SOUND EFFECTS WITH YOUR MOUTH!)
Let’s get specific and go Character Reels because I feel that those are what you are interested in and see the most =) Warning, long post~
—
First, you need to keep in mind that demos should either be 100% ORIGINAL material (Meaning that you wrote the script from your own brain without using already made characters) or from roles you have been OFFICIALLY cast as (Meaning I can make a demo reel using my voices for Diana (Seduce Me), Chondra (Y2K), Zevera (Orion) and other characters I’ve been cast as officially, but I cannot use my Beatrice or Mikasa interpretations because I am not the official VA behind the character.) I know people who mix both of these catagories into their demos and that’s completely okay.
The most important things about your demo, though is that it needs to stay under 1 minute and 30 seconds (A demo should be around a MINUTE long at best) and your STRONGEST voices need to be in the first 15-30 seconds of the demo.
If you are making a demo with original character voices, write out a script and include as many DIFFERENT voices as you can. I do not just mean different like having 3 characters that sound like they’re coming from 3 different people (Though you SHOULD include those), but I mean different as in different emotions, different tones, different usages of your voice that doesn’t hurt you vocally. I know actors who can only do 3 distinct characters, but they do them VERY fucking well.
One of the greatest examples of demos I have had the pleasure to mix is jonahscottva Jonah Scott’s 2014 Fall/Winter Demo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgRpIqi2ayc
Note how he has different characters, but uses different tones and emotions and inflections with each. If you listen closely and dissect his sound, you can almost feel when he uses the back of this throat, the front, the full space in his mouth, his nose, when he pushes with his diaphragm, when he speaks from his head voice, etc. He is using EVERY part of his skill to show his different talents. Your demo NEEDS to show what you can do and have many ways you can use your voice to portray different characters.
The same can be said if you are an official (again, NOT A FAN VOICE) voice for a character. It shows what roles you’ve been cast as and what are your strongest voice types.
Now, once you organize your demo reel, you can add music or sound effects to it, but BE CAREFUL. Do not overshadow your voice with these add ons. Music and SFX should ENHANCE your performances, not be the meat of the demo. Remember what your demo is about: YOUR VOICE.
And Finally, NEVER EVER EVER use copyrighted music or sound effects (unless you have permission from the creators). NEVER use fandub lines/characters or music from copyrighted material. The only reason you should be using music or sound effects from copyrighted material is if you are an OFFICIAL voice for a character in that material (IE, I can use music from Seduce Me to put in the background of my Diana clip in my demo because I am the official voice of Diana. If Jonah wanted to use Damien in his demo, all he’d have to do is ask me to use the music for the Damien clip and I will most likely say yes.)
If you want music and sound effects, use Royalty Free music and sfx from websites like Shockwave sound or Kevin McLeod. Yes, some sites will make you pay for the music, but I promise it’s worth the investment. If you can compose your own music or make your own sound effects, do that!
Now, some last tips:
Make sure there is little to no space between each character. People need to believe that these are different characters so having no space in between helps us instantly differentiate the characters and go “OH! New character. Okay.”
Make sure you put different sounding characters next to each other. Try your best not to have two characters that sound similar next to each other or else they’ll blend into each other and sound like one character.
Make sure you solidly clarify your voice types. If you are wishy washy with your voices, the director WILL know. Directors want solid actors that can make a character and make them believable as possible.
Make sure you PRACTICE your voices. If a director finds your reel and says “HEY! I liked how you did this in your demo. Do that voice for this game for a million dollars” you better be able to perfectly pull off that voice with no problems or else you’ll have lost a million dollars.
Hope that helps~! <3 -Gives cake and tea-
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen. This man is my new hero.
OMGYouGuys. I have a robot friend.
Ok Siri seems awesome. Of course I wouldn't know because I have an Android phone. However, as I was browsing a site for Siri similar to Damn-You-Auto-Correct, they had some funny conversations from Jeannie, Andriod's Siri. Are you following me? I have a robot now.
I have Jeannie on my phone. Except I renamed her Emily, because it lets you do that. And then I can say, Hey Em, give me some nutritional facts on Wendy's Chicken Nuggets.
Apparently, it's been around for over a year. How did I not know about this?
Now, I have a personal assistant, you know, Em, to set alarms for me or to tell me what sound a chicken makes.
I can not wait to go home and make Emily do all sorts of things. (That's what she said?)
YES.
