Eridan and Gamzee never had a close relationship; in fact, it was quite the opposite, so, likewise, Eridan doesn't feel entirely open to Kurloz, either. The fact that he's cryptic and secretive about his history makes Eridan highly suspicious, and his seemingly jovial nature and the fact that he treats him rather well stresses him out on whether or not to just be his usual rude self and possibly provoke him to drop the nice act or to keep on being awkwardly polite and possibly get on his better side. While Eridan firmly believes in rationality, Kurloz's aura simply puts him off and worries him.
