in the elder scrolls v: skyrim, void salts can be obtained from storm atronachs to be used for potions, forging weapons, smithing, and enchanting armor.

✦ void salts can be crafted using salt, amethyst, and one soul gem. ✦ they are not named for storm atronachs themselves, but rather the element they are created from. ✦ types of potions that can be crafted from void salts include: fortify magicka, damage health, weakness to shock, and resist magic. ✦ you can forge shock damage weapons from void salts, as well as conjure storm atronachs and craft storm atronach related objects, such as staves and scrolls. ✦ lastly, you can craft enchanted daedric armor and bonemold armor.

ingredients & items:

black lava salt

piece of amethyst

charged piece of quartz [soul gem]

small bowl

small jar

✦ this recipe IS NOT EDIBLE! it specifically calls for black lava salt, which is made with sea salt and charcoal; however, black himalayan salt (kala namak) contains sulfuric compounds, so avoid this type of salt if you have an allergy to sulfonamides or sulfa drugs (a commonly known antibiotic) ✦

instructions:

begin during the day and hour of saturn and in the presence of a new or dark moon

combine and grind down the salt if you want a more powdery consistency, or leave it as is - add it to your bowl (solid black lava salt looks a bit more like void salts but you do you)

place the amethyst and quartz in the bowl of salt

focus on the intent of crafting these void salts to manifest the intentions listed above as you cast the spell (visual witches, now would be a good time to envision a black, yet somehow glowing, orb of light surrounding the bowl)

whenever you're ready, close out the spell however you wish

allow to sit overnight in the darkness of the new moon - bonus points if there's a thunderstorm going on!

when ready, remove the crystals and add your void salts to a small jar for ease of use

safely tuck the crystals away to be used again for this particular method of enchantment

some ideas:

add a pinch of void salt to each corner of your home for protection during bad weather

add to spell jars and sachets

place inside of a poppet for sympathetic magic - baneful or benefic (imagine programming it for either cursing OR improving someone else's magical abilities, for example)

add to storm water for an extra boost

if you use a bowl of water to summon storms, add a pinch of void salt to your bowl

place storm related tools in a void salt bath to charge

use as a base for candle spells

use to charge other items for the intentions listed above

enchant talismans to both shield yourself and make your targets miserable in the process

enchant talismans to help improve your magical abilities and practice

use when crafting tools or weapons for spellcraft

use as an aid in astral travel

use for matters of deep introspection and reflection

add a pinch to the bath for stillness, peace, and quiet

add to a dream pillow for deep sleep and no dreams

use during your meditation routine to clear your mind

use for spirit work and crossing the veil

add to any spell to be used as a catalyst

use to banish and bind, to send that energy so deep into the void that it becomes irrelevant

use against a target to cause stillness and loneliness in their life [the void's association with nothingness]

use against a target to confuse them or distort their reality

✦ magical ideas ✦ ✦ if you're wondering about how saturn could have anything to do with storm magic in this context, just know that there are literal hurricanes on saturn that can last for centuries ✦ i say "begin" in regards to timing because in my practice, so long as you start the spell during the appropriate planetary hour/day, you should be good (ymmv) ✦ final notes: don't eat your void salts

A simple black salt recipe ( or if you want to get fancy you can call it void salts like in TES)

1. Grab some herbs. Any edible herbs will do. But you have to burn them so it's easiest when they are dried.

2. Burn most of the herbs. But not all. We want some left unburnt.

3. Add black pepper and salt. If your really on a budget you can skip all the other steps and just mix salt and black pepper.

4. Mix until you get something like the image below. It's more Grey than normal because I added more salt than I should.

I have been using this in my cooking for the past week instead of just adding salt and pepper. The unburnt herbs add a nice aroma and the ashes provide a great smokey flavor.!

Void Salts

I am far from the first to talk about Void Salts. In fact, I'm the fourth person to write about them from what I have on this blog alone.

In-Game Lore

Void Salts are an alchemical ingredient from the Elder Scrolls game that comes from dead Storm Atronachs, dead Winged Twilights, or the Atronach Forge. The Atronach Forge requires a soul gem, a salt pile, and an amethyst.

In Oblivion, it's used to restore and fortify Magicka, damage Health, and Dispel magical effects. In Skyrim, it causes a weakness to Shock, resists magic, fortifies Magicka, and damages Health. In the alchemy portion of Blades, it both does Shock damage and resists Shock. In the enchanting portion of Blades, it does Shock damage and revenge, resists Shock, and fortifies Shock damage.

Pop Culture Witchcraft

Deactivated user insertcheesywitchypunhere's recipe for Void Salts says that you can use it in divination, necromancy, and spirit work.

@grayladyofthewell has a recipe for Void Salts that can be used for banishing, protection, shadow work and magic, cleansing, purification, and void work.

@nightkunoichi has a recipe for Void Salts that can be used for weakening enemies and spirits, calming and fortifying the mind, dream work, inflicting confusions, and illusions.

Void Salts Void salts are useful for protection, banishing,shadow work, shadow magic, cleansing, purification, and of course, Void work. Direct applications are to help clear crystals or any tool of magic of previous energy, to assist in curse or hex breaking, to remove energy from a person or place, to create a space that spirits can not breach, to delve into the shadows that we don’t know are there, to remove any spiritual entities by pushing them into the void, or just to communicate with the void as it’s own energetic entity. Recipe:
1 pt Ashes of Old Spells
1 pt Sea Salt (or plain table salt)
1 pt Black Sea Salt
1 pt Black Sanding Sugar Mix and set out to absorb the energies from the void of the cosmos at night. Bring it in the next day and keep in a dark place to maintain the energies.

Feeling Salty

Salt has its own associations in witchcraft, and a whole lot of it. Most of it boils down to cleansing, earth, healing, and protection. It's used as an offering to deities. So let's go over the Skyrim salts.

Salt Pile

Based on the timing of the world, it's safe to say that this is sea salt, which is associated with water. In-game, the salt pile's effects are causing a weakness to magic, fortifying Restoration spells, slowing things down, and regenerating Magicka quickly.

Fire Salts

Fire salts are found via the bodies of fire atronachs. Fire salt has been associated with defense, energy, the element of fire, manifestation, power, and protection by other witches. In-game, it's used for weakening someone's frost resistance, helping someone resist fire, and restoring and regenerating Magicka quickly.

Frost Salts

Frost salts are found in the bodies of frost atronachs. Frost salts are associated with balance, calming, cold, energy, ice, luck, and spirit work by other witches. In-game, it's used for weakening someone's fire resistance, helping someone resist cold and frost, restoring Magicka, and fortifying Conjuration spells.

Void Salts

Void salts are found in the bodies of storm atronachs. Void salts are associated with banishing, breaking curses or hexes, calming, cleansing, confusion, dreams, illnesses, illusion, protection, purification, shadow magic and work, void work, weakening enemies and spirits, and warding. In-game, it's used to make someone weaker to magic, fortifying Restoration spells, damaging health, and fortifying someone's Magicka. In the lore, they've been used to make portals, so any work with liminal spaces or astral projection can be done with these to help boost it.
