Okay so it has been over a week now since I saw the film and I only now feel like I can answer this. I kept typing up a long answer and deleting immediately, so I am keeping this shortish and sweetish

I absolutely hated the film. They completely butchered it. Rocky is one of my favourite characters of all time and they absolutely ruined him. They ruined him so much I am offended on his behalf. (The design was nice though! And the fact he was an animatronic/puppet was wonderful! In fact they used no greenscreens at all which is amazing).

They ruined the entire rest of the story as well. They missed out essential plot points and really missed the point of the book. It was impressive how much they completely fucked it up

The reason I have taken a week to answer is not because I hated it, but because no one else does. I have not seen one single review that isn't glowing praise. I feel like I am living in a different version of reality from everyone else because I even seen people going so far to say it was a good adaptation (not just a film they liked in its own regard).

I am very glad I went with my dad who had the exact same thoughts and feelings as me (he joked there were two versions of the film, the good version and the one we saw). It genuinely feels like I saw a different film and I feel a bit disconnected from reality it's the most bizarre experience.

Book!Rocky is a competent engineer that is the main character's equal and their skills complement each other. The whole point is that they're of equal intelligence (and they're bffs and I love them so much). The film made him basically a stupid pet that was rude and obtrusive and the butt of the joke. It was uncomfortable to watch because book!Rocky is sooooo good

(I have just typed out this whole response assuming you have seen the film so er sorry if you haven't) (no proper spoilers anyway)

It was very faithful to the film with some scenes added and some sequences lengthened.

You weren't allowed to take photos of Totoro or his friends (they had lil signs saying that beforehand) so you have to go into it blind which worked really well. I spent the entire first section waiting for the reveal of the lil white one and wondering how on Earth they were going to do them??? I genuinely had no idea what medium Totoro would be in at all. They were all sooo cute and so well done.

I didn't get any merch because I forgot at the end of a west end show they send you straight outside down a different way than where you came up so you have to get merch before or in the intermission (which I spent queueing for the loos).

The music was phenomenal. The singer was stunning.

The way they did the soot sprites was amazing. They really added an entire new element and gave them/spirits in general such a presence.

I can't imagine what it would be like if one hadn't seen the film beforehand? Because a lot of the set/environment seemed to rely on you knowing what it was trying to be, rather than translating it fully? Also I just rewatched the film this evening and realised they seemed to really mistranslate one conversation from the film, changing the meaning of it completely. It wasn't a big moment or anything, just a very odd choice.

It was also funny! Which the film isn't.

*mild spoiler describing the first minute* So there was a screen up on the front of the stage acting as a title screen as the audience came in which said "My Neighbor Totoro" and the TOTORO was large and when the opening music starts they wiggle and it's cute, and they have little bugs like in the film's opening credits. (and I teared up immediately it was so sweet and cute).

But possibly my favourite part of the entire show was how they lowered the letter "u" from the top of the screen and it butts into the title and 'corrects' it to "My Neighbour Totoro" for the British English audience. It was hysterical to me. (all the merch spelled it correctly too which I was grateful for).
